  • A disgusting, punitive health care ‘reform’

It was a disgusting spectacle to watch the Clown-in-Chief celebrate at the White House with House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republicans after they’d passed a bill that will take health insurance from about 25 million people.
Yes, this is their idea of “reform.” As I’ve previously written – and now submit as one of “Rick’s Rules of Politics” – whenever conservative Republicans talk about “reforming” something, it always means they want to take it from you.

  • After 100 days: A strange, failed presidency

It was President Franklin D. Roosevelt who established the standard of measuring a presidency by what is accomplished during its first 100 days.
FDR had promised to tackle the problems of the Great Depression immediately upon entering office, and he did exactly that. He’d made it clear that he’d use every available tool of the federal government to ease the suffering of the people.

  • Don’t be complacent

Last month I saw a news story about Russia’s plan to build new class of aircraft carriers. Right now, Russia only has one carrier, the Kuznetsov.

  • Wiretap claim another Trump absurdity

It’s been reported that even Donald Trump’s aides and Cabinet officers live in fear of what kind of nonsense he’ll put out next on his infamous Twitter feed.
He is, after all, the president – God help us – and generally when a president makes a statement, well, it’s considered a declaration of policy. Cabinet officers, allegedly, worry about what he might say in the middle of the night, because the next day, they may have to defend it as policy.

  • An election every year

If you like politics like I do, then Virginia is a great place to live. We have an election every year. Federal elections and most city and town elections take place on even numbered years. State and county elections are held on odd numbered years.

  • The Scots-Irish

    By James F. Burns

Call them the other Irish—the invisible Irish, the Scots-Irish.  They’re more associated with corn, coal, and moonshine than green beer.  They’re the offspring of Scots whom King James transplanted to northern Ireland at the same time he was colonizing Jamestown in Virginia and producing the King James Version of the Bible in the early 1600s.

  • ‘Luck of the Irish’….or success planning?

    By Vicki Gardner,
    Executive Director
Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce

        We have options.
St. Patrick’s Day is here once again and with it the term, ‘Luck of the Irish”.

  • Conservative insanity over health care

When the Affordable Care Act was first passed, most conservatives acted as though Karl Marx had risen from the grave, seized power in Washington, D.C., and locked us all in communist chains.
The kindest thing they said about it was that it was “government-run,” health care, which it certainly was not. But they always trot out that mindless phrase any time insurance companies lose the slightest ability to control whether you and I receive affordable care.

  • Impeach Trump?

It seems, from reading Rick Howell’s column last week, that Mr. Howell is ready to impeach President Donald Trump. I believe his enthusiasm for impeachment is extremely premature.
He made a big deal of claiming that President Trump may have violated the  “emoluments clause” of the Constitution.
