  • Commentary: Still concerns with Zoning Ordinance proposal

    By Lynn C. Barnes

While the Board of Supervisors has substantially modified its original Zoning Ordinance proposal, some remaining items are of concern and I request that they seriously consider rejecting the following:

  • Budget, transportation issues being negotiated

    By Sen. Steve Newman
    23rd District

With only days remaining until the 2013 session is scheduled to adjourn, the Virginia General Assembly is negotiating the highest profile measures under consideration: the budget and transportation.  As session is winding down, work on all legislation must be done by this Saturday, Feb. 23.

As to the Board of Supervisors and Planning meeting on Feb. 11 which I attended and spoke briefly, I offer the following written clarification and re-statement:

  • Reflecting on the State of the Union
  • The president’s words should be followed by actions

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

  • The Great Budget War

Congressional Republicans and President Barack Obama are currently embroiled in their latest battle in The Great Budget War. The year began with a deal, in which President Obama got 90 percent of what he wanted, that prevented the country from going over the “fiscal cliff.” Republicans got virtually nothing for their concessions on taxes.

  • Conservatism on life support

Wherever you look in politics and government, you see trends that reflect liberal and progressive goals and a rejection of conservative ideas.
First and foremost is the result of the November, 2012 election. Republicans ran against Barack Obama by branding him as a big-government extremist, with many even calling him a socialist.

  • Burn Ban to begin February 15

The Commonwealth’s 4 p.m. Burning Law goes into effect Feb. 15, 2013  which is traditionally the start of spring fire season in Virginia.

  • There’s still much to do

    By Sen. Steve Newman
    23rd District

It is doubtful the 2013 session of the Virginia General Assembly will have a week more eventful than this one.  Amendments to the biennial budget, the continuing debate over transportation funding proposals, and crossover all garnered headlines this week.  With just two weeks remaining until the scheduled end of session on February 23, there’s still much to be done.

  • Crossover hits the General Assembly

Some of the biggest issues of the session were debated this week, making for one event-filled day after another.  The Governor’s transportation plan was up for a vote on the House floor on Tuesday.  Crossover, the halfway mark of the legislative calendar came that day, too.  And on Thursday, the House and the Senate approved different versions of amendments to the state’s two-year budget.
