  • The scammers are back at it!

    By Sheriff Mike Brown

Once again, the good citizens of Bedford County are falling victim to phone scams. Please talk about these scams with your friends and neighbors. Especially the elderly folks you know, since they are the ones most targeted.

  • The scammers are back at it!

    By Jerry Hale

Anyone who’s spending significant time in their boat or on their dock can’t help but have noticed the latest water recreation passion on SML: wake sufing.
While not quite as widespread as Stand Up Paddle Boarding, wake surfing has become SML’s fastest-growing tow sport despite the seemingly prohibitive high “entry cost” of a towboat equipped to create the enormous wakes required give an adult or teenager a satisfying surfing experience.

  • Trump and his ‘Christian’ troops

Everyone was joking for a while that it seemed no one in particular wanted to speak at the Republican National Convention. It also looked, for a while, that very few people were enthusiastic about being on the GOP ticket with Donald Trump.
Well, Mr. “Make America Great Again” has gotten some movement on both those fronts, picking Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate, and producing convention speakers who were heavy on, well, preachers.

  • Kevin Willis was right

A suggestion that District 7 Supervisor Kevin Willis made last week — one that was unanimously accepted by his fellow supervisors — was a wise suggestion.
As the supervisors discussed Ginger Ausband’s special use permit for a folk art retreat, a condition that no alcoholic beverages be permitted caught Willis’ attention. The condition had been attached by the planning commission when they unanimously recommended approval of Ausband’s special use permit.

  • Honoring our nation’s independence

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

as we come together this Monday to celebrate the 240th year of our nation’s independence, let us take the opportunity to reflect on our Founders’ understanding of our fundamental rights as individuals and their belief that only a system of representative democracy– supported by the rule of law– could guarantee our God-given rights.

  • What does drowning look like?

    By Pat Massa
    Chair
    SML Water Safety Council

As a rookie lifeguard more than 50 years ago, I had all the requisite skills to save a drowning victim’s life but knew little about how to identify a drowning victim.
During the ‘80s and ‘90s, two of my colleagues did extensive research—viewing videos and interviewing literally thousands of lifeguards—to determine what a person looks like when they are drowning and how a lifeguard or other rescuer can best use that information.

  • Bathrooms? You gotta be kidding me

Many years ago, I read a book called “Second Serve,” written by a former doctor and tennis professional named Renee Richards.
This wasn’t your standard autobiography of a self-obsessed athlete interested in telling her story to make even more money. By today’s standards, it was a ground-breaking introduction to what we now know as being “transgender.”

  • Becoming more lethal
  • Muslim elected mayor; sky didn’t fall

Something happened recently in one of the world’s great cities, London, England, that, sadly, probably couldn’t happen yet in America.
Sadiq Khan, a practicing Muslim, was sworn in as mayor of that city after his victory over a Trump-like candidate. His Conservative Party opponent – like Ben Carson here – had openly questioned whether Khan’s religion was appropriate. It looks like the voters answered that question.

  • Is he being honest?

Although  we’re still hearing a lot of fussing and fuming from Republican Party leaders about Donald Trump, I think they are going to come to terms with the fact that, like it or not, he is going to be their party’s nominee for president.  They will grudgingly begin to support him as the only alternative will be Hillary Clinton getting elected. That would be dreadful.
