  • Obama kicks his lapdog

All through President Barack Obama’s first term, most of the mainstream media has served as his lapdog. The mainstream media is dominated by liberals and they’ve seen President Obama as their ideological soul mate. They’ve shown fawning obeisance to him, giving him a soft approach when they should have been asking him sharp questions. All he has to do is speak and they happily wag their tail and roll over on their back to get their belly rubbed.

  • We must continue to focus on job creation

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

At a time when high school and college students from Virginia’s 5th District and across the country are graduating and looking for career opportunities, one would think news headlines would focus on Friday's unemployment report and the continued weakness of our economy. Instead, our news is saturated with evidence of an overreaching federal government.

  • Route 58 energy tour demonstrates need For Commonsense Energy Policies

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

This past week, I traveled throughout Southside visiting communities along Route 58 to discuss the impact of high energy prices. After making over 30 stops, it is clear that 5th District Virginians continue to suffer from Washington’s failure to adopt a sensible energy policy.

  • A message for our graduates: Seek opportunity

A wise man named Albert Einstein once said, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”  As high school and college students across the Sixth District don caps and gowns, walk across the stage, and accept a diploma, we are reminded of the great opportunities fostered by education and hard work.

  • Military scandals must be addressed

His attorney announced last week that U.S. Army staff sergeant Robert Bales will plead guilty to the murder of 16 Afghan civilians, most of them children, in order to avoid the death penalty.
The attack, the worst U.S. atrocity of the long occupation of Afghanistan, happened in March of 2012, when Bales left his base on two separate occasions to carry out the murders.

  • How long can we get away with it?

A couple of weeks ago I read a news article about a hand-written letter that North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jong-un, sent to China’s President Xi Jinping. The letter was hand delivered by a high-ranking North Korean army officer who wore a “Mao suit” instead of a military uniform. The exact contents of the letter are unknown, but the article stated that it was part of an effort by North Korea to build better ties with China.

  • Honoring our fallen veterans, repealing the president’s health care law, and holding the administration accountable for abuses of power

    By Congressman Robert Hurt
Communicating with the people of Virginia’s 5th District and hearing your feedback is very important to us. In order to ensure that we keep you up to date on what is going on from month to month, we record a monthly video address. You may watch the video address on our website at hurt.house.gov, and you may read the address below:

  • Holding the IRS accountable

Unacceptable, illegal, outrageous, a blatant abuse of power, and a breach of trust – all terms appropriately used to describe the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) recent admission that they targeted various conservative groups for additional scrutiny as they applied for tax-exempt status.

  • Are you ready for E. W. Jackson?

Ken Cuccinelli got what he wanted when he and his supporters manipulated the state GOP into scheduling a convention rather than a primary for their 2013 nominees.
Everyone knows that a primary is more democratic than a convention. Anyone in your party can show up at their usual voting location and cast a ballot.
