  • Congress must demand accountability on U.S. action in Libya

    Nearly three months ago U.S. forces, at the command of President Obama and without the consent of the U.S. Congress, began attacking targets in Libya controlled by Moammar Gaddafi. I think most Americans, including myself, agree that seeing this tyrannical dictator and his regime of thugs removed from power would be a good thing. However, I think most Americans, including myself, also feel strongly that American forces should not be committed to this kind of mission without the consent of the U.S. Congress.

  • Improved pension benefits for wartime veterans

        Pension is available for wartime veterans, who are permanently and totally disabled from disabilities not related with service.  The monthly rate is increased if the veteran is married or has dependent children.

  • Of summer, sports, and…President Goode?

        Got the summer doldrums yet? The calendar tells us the season of heat is not even officially here until next Tuesday, the 21st. But we know better.

        It’s been hot, very hot, and it’s just getting started. Summer heat has a way of melting away one’s enthusiasms.
        But I’ve always found that politics and sports, enjoyed in equal measures, if possible, can usher along your uninterrupted joy of life, even in extreme weather.

  • Obama has made it worse

        Last month saw some grim economic news. Job creation has slowed to a crawl. Only 54,000 jobs were created in May — an insufficient number to keep up with the natural growth in people entering the job market. At the same time, however, hours worked by folks who have jobs increased by half a percent. Obviously employers are reluctant to hire new employees and are getting more work out of existing workers.

  • Americans deserve a waiver from the new health care law

    Nearly a year and a half ago, with total disregard for the will of the American people, President Obama signed the new health care reform legislation into law. This new law is defined by federal regulations, mandates, a myriad of new big government programs, and a significant increase in federal spending and debt at a cost to our country too high to bear.

  • ‘Tea Party’ flexing its alleged muscle

        In the Virginia legislative elections for this year and in next year’s presidential race, we haven’t seen the end of the “tea party” thing. Not yet, anyway.

        It seems their candidates are popping up everywhere and their alleged influence is under scrutiny at the national level.

  • Giving credit where credit is due

        I’m still am not sure what to make of President Barack Obama. I’ve seen some Facebook postings nominating him as the worst president ever, although I don’t think that description fits him. Jimmy Carter still has a firm grip on that honor and I’ve come to the conclusion that President Obama is not Jimmy Carter II.

  • Town Meeting

    I will be at the Moneta Library from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on June 4 for my quarterly Town Meeting.  I hope you will come by to talk about any topic you wish.  

        The bigger topics might be the budget, real estate assessments and tax bills.  The budget has been passed and the funds will be allocated at our first meeting in June.  It was a difficult budget year, as you probably saw in the papers.  We are not anticipating an easier year next year but there will not be the added complicating factor of the reassessment.
