This past week, the House debated HR 1, the Full Year Continuing Appropriations Act. This bill would fund the government through September 30th of this year at $100 billion less than the amount President Obama requested in his Fiscal Year 2011 budget.

Given the current fiscal crisis that faces the 5th District and the nation, I delivered the following remarks on the House floor to discuss the urgent need to cut government spending and reduce government debt:

This past week, President Obama sent his budget proposal for fiscal year 2012 to Congress.  A budget proposal that quite simply spends too much, taxes too much and borrows way too much.  This proposal continues to lead our nation down the same unsustainable path by growing government, further weakening the economy and increasing our national debt.

    The second-to-last week before the General Assembly adjourns for the year on February 28 brought swift action on legislation.  For me, those actions were both gratifying and frustrating.

    For a party that thinks it’s going to win the White House next year, Republicans are off to a slow start with a weak potential field of candidates.

    Those who would walk to the strains of “Hail to the Chief” are certainly taking their time announcing their campaigns. In fact, not a single candidate has made an announcement, not even the imagined front-runner, Mitt Romney.
