Memorial Day is a time for us to come together as a nation and honor the sacrifice of those brave men and women who have given their lives in defense of our country.

  • Putting Americans back to work and growing our economy

Today, the American people are facing one of the most challenging times in our nation’s history.  Our economy remains sluggish, people fear losing their jobs and their homes, and many are worried about the future their children and grandchildren will inherit. They are deeply concerned about the outlook for our great country and wonder if their children will grow up in the same America they did.  People are looking for real solutions to the problems we face.

  • Facebook, America’s newest small town

    By Beck Stanley

    Bedford

Facebook is turning our world into a small town. From constant streams of useless rumors, to the birthdays of all 975 of your “friends,” the social networking site is building us into a digital community. People are able to log on, post whatever is on their mind about themselves or others, and later face few consequences for clicking “Remove Post,” an action that can erase prior behavior. • GOP Medicare scheme defeated

Rep. Paul Ryan’s radical plan to end Medicare as we know it has met with two immediate results: defeat in the U.S. Senate, and a galvanizing point of organization for Democrats.

This past week, I attended and hosted over 20 events throughout the 5th District. We made stops in Charlottesville, Danville, South Boston, Chase City, Farmville, Hardy, Rocky Mount, Java, Martinsville, Lawrenceville, Kenbridge, and Chatham.

  • How bad can the GOP field get?

The weak and mediocre state of the Republican presidential field for 2012 has become such a given in recent weeks, I almost feel like I’m picking on them if I write about it….

But, I said almost…Honestly, I’ve observed presidential politics for a long time, since about 1968, and I’ve never seen a field of “contenders” from an out-of-power party – Democratic or Republican – that’s this bad.
