    The Democratic Party

It perplexes a lot of people, me included, about why many people who are struggling economically and socially vote against their own economic and social interests.  It is stranger still that these same people seem to be the ones who revel in criticizing the very political party that has done the most for them.   Think about it.
        * If you receive or will receive Social Security benefits, you should thank the Democratic Party.

    Howell’s
    obsession

It is ironic Rick Howell recently wrote for more gun control and this week expressed his opinion regarding a Texas abortion law.
In the first article, Howell opined the need to take away a constitutional right to bear arms purportedly to save lives, and this week applauds a court-mandated right that has left millions dead. In one instance, he demands the courts and politicians legislate morality, and in the next, condemns legislation that attempts to do just that.

    Why Clinton is better on
    climate change/global warming

The following is a letter from the scientific community sent to Congress in June of 2016.
“We, as leaders of major scientific organizations, write to remind you of the consensus scientificview of climate change.
Observations throughout the world make it clear that climate change is occurring, and rigorous

    What is
    reasonable?

Reasonable people differ on what is reasonable  Based upon his June 29, 2016 op ed it appears that Mr. Howell considers universal background checks and the use of secret lists to curtail the rights of law abiding citizens as reasonable measures. I respectfully disagree.

    Is it true?

Thank God they’ve finally abolished the no texting while driving law! What an inconvenience that’s been.
And also, the old law about coming to a complete stop at a stop sign. What a couple of silly laws to have. I figured there was just not enough money in it to enforce those two laws, let alone the other stupid laws like headlights on when it is raining or no loud music within 50 feet of a business.

    Emergency
    service costs money

I am a retiree who moved from Va. Beach to Bedford Co. (4) years ago. I actually ended up buying my daughter’s house. For the past (4) years I have received a mailing from the Moneta Rescue Squad requesting a contribution that is addressed to my daughter & son-in-law. My son-in-law passed away in 2010.

    Change in old guard

From the Bower Center renovation, to tax abatement and economic development programs, to Bedford Main Street, we have definitely seen a change in the old guard that once prevented Bedford from flourishing.

    Rate increases unneeded

At its April 12 and 26,2016 meetings, Bedford Town Council voted to increase the Electric Utilities rate, the Meals tax and rejected the Transient Occupancy tax. As a council member and Chair of the Finance Committee, I recommended against and voted against these increases because I believe they are unnecessary.
