    Supporting spouses of law enforcement

Over the past year law enforcement has had a lot of negative criticism.
So, we the spouses of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and Bedford Police Department are starting a new program to support our spouses in law enforcement. We are in the infant stages of this program; but one of the first items we would like to do is say thank you with this letter.

    Teach your children about guns

What can be done in today’s environment to protect students and  teachers from being helpless victims of crazed killers as it just happened in Roseburg, Oregon  USA?
Fear will inspire you or fear can destroy the multitudes. Wake up America! The killings are not disappearing but continue to increase.
If those students and teachers could have recognized the hopelessness of the situation many lives could have been saved.

    Challenger’s comments bring concerns

I watched Sheriff Brown’s opponent on TV Friday, and afterward, researched his background. I see from his bio that he put on the Internet, that he has been here for five or six years, having moved down from New Jersey.

    Cats being killed

The community needs to know that calling animal control about cats results in cats being killed and nothing more.
Our tax dollars are being used to kill healthy animals at the Bedford pound. Don’t be under the illusion that cats find homes once brought to the “shelter”.

    ‘Jewel’ of Bedford

A few years ago, I wrote about Bedford’s “Jewel,” which is Bedford County Nursing Home. Now again, I must sing the praises that they so richly deserve.
My grandmother, my mom, and now my niece, Nan Hemminger were sent to the Lord from the loving arms of  the nursing home staff. The care received from the staff and administrators far exceeded their individual roles.  We were surrounded by loving, caring, “family” of caregivers.

    Act on climate change

On Tuesday, September 25, Pope Francis will visit the United States and meet with the President and also a joint session of Congress.
Our nation, he will remind us, has often led in times of great challenge. We face a great challenge now, a global challenge.

    Why didn’t they show up?

At a recent Bedford Republican Party meeting, three candidates for the soil and water board were on the agenda to speak to the committee but did not show up.

    Gratitude
    for Fair

I would like to express my gratitude for the opportunity to be involved in the Bedford County Fair over this past weekend.
This overwhelmingly positive event came at a time when the community needed it most. To me, the number of local public servants that stepped up to volunteer funding, time and energy for others effectively demonstrated the compassion I hope to always see from my home town.

Let the new board make the choice

The lame duck coalition of County Supervisors--namely Arrington, Parker  and Pollard, along with incumbent Sharp-- seem to be intent on naming a new County Administrator before leaving office in January. Wouldn’t you think the professional and courteous thing to do would be to hand off that decision to the new Board?

    What’s the rush?

    Masking the inhumane industry

Shipping and other associated costs which can be reimbursed: Was this the discussion around the table at your local business?  It could have been, however “they” are not shipping paper or food products, they are shipping human beings!
