        It is through the efforts of this and surrounding communities, guests, and others that have given us the opportunity to remain open Friday, Saturday & Sunday through March 31, 2011.  Full operations of the Peaks of Otter Lodge & Restaurant  will begin April 1 through November 2011.

    SRHS After Prom Party planned

        Staunton River High School Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) will be holding its 16th annual After Prom Party this spring for juniors, seniors and their guests. As in the past, The purpose of After Prom Party is to provide a safe environment for celebration that is drug and alcohol free. Sponsoring and supporting the After Prom Party for the students offers them an alternative to attending unsafe parties where drugs and alcohol may be available to them.

        I have lived in Bedford County since 1969 and my grandmother, who was born in Bedford County, frequently shared her memories and affection for the county.  I share this to acknowledge that I am no stranger to Bedford and its history.  With that in mind, these are my observations about this Stalin bust fiasco.

        December 2010 marked our fifth year of providing Christmas assistance to low-income families in Bedford City and Bedford County.  Each year, I gain precious memories of events related to our mission of serving low-income families in a dignified and respectful manner.  When thinking about Christmas  2010, I can also be thankful and grateful as I remember what did not happen.

        -for standing up for those principles on which our country was founded: religious tolerance and separation of church and state.

        -for valuing the ever more diverse nature of our precious community of Bedford.

        I hope Mr. Hackworth was watching Good Morning America this morning (Monday, Dec. 13) on WSET when Ed Smart, father of Elizabeth Smart, talked about the sexual predator, Brian Mitchell, kidnapping his daughter Elizabeth Smart in June of 2002. 
        Smart was found alive nine months later on March 12, 2003. Mr. Smart also spoke in glowing terms about the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Forces and how important they are in protecting our children.
