    Why reversion?

As a Bedford County resident and business owner, I appreciate the recent article, “Common questions about reversion.” (9/21/11)
The article was somewhat informative, but I am still confused as to exactly why the decision is being made for Bedford City to revert back to a town. It would be great to read a story that would state, in layman terms, what the positive and negative aspects of this merger between city and county would be.

    BCM addresses local need

The fact that over 3,300 children in Bedford City and County are at risk of hunger came as no surprise.  The figure was cited in a recent article that focused on The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank’s recent survey.

    Speak up

I have great concerns for the direction of Bedford County Public Schools. AYP scores have dropped over the years to the point that no elementary school in the Liberty Zone made AYP.
Enrollment is declining, think parents are looking at these scores? Amazingly the scores declined at the same time that the “Staffing Standards” were adopted. This adoption reduced our teaching staff, all the while increasing the Central Office. Where are the “Staffing Standards” for Central Office?

    Timing of repairs

I know that the state has to watch its budget with the economy as it is these days. This is especially true with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). That is why it was very puzzling when I saw the repaving being done on eastbound US 460 around Bedford.  It is not that it wasn’t needed, but the timing of it being done.

    Tribute to

    Annis McCabe

Annis McCabe was one of Bedford County’s many blessings. Annis passed away on August 16. A memorial service celebrating her life was held on August 19 in the beautiful garden of the Sedalia Center, the cultural arts facility north of Bedford City which she and her husband, the late Dr. William McCabe, helped establish.

    Parents

    involvement

Did our superintendent of Bedford County Public Schools, Dr. Schuch, ever consider parents when he began making changes to our schools? I don’t think so.

    Finishing the job

On July 3 our small family farm received quite a lot of damage from a severe thunderstorm. Six houses were without power due to the electric pole being splintered and the transformer being shattered. Our Bedford electric department came almost immediately and worked diligently into the night to restore power to the homes and then came back on July 4 and waited out another storm to finish the job. Our thanks to the men who responded to the call.
