  • The Scots-Irish

    By James F. Burns

Call them the other Irish—the invisible Irish, the Scots-Irish.  They’re more associated with corn, coal, and moonshine than green beer.  They’re the offspring of Scots whom King James transplanted to northern Ireland at the same time he was colonizing Jamestown in Virginia and producing the King James Version of the Bible in the early 1600s.

  • Brawling while the ship heads for the rocks

And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. Mark 3:24.

Recently some Republican congressmen have been faced with town hall meetings packed with shrieking liberals. The speakers have been there to oppose Republican efforts to repeal ObamaCare as well as express their disapproval of just about everything  President Donald Trump wants to do.

  • The Russian albatross around his neck

If there’s a fatal scandal brewing in the Trump regime, it’s likely to be based upon the continuing questions over his campaign’s contact with Russian government officials both during and after the election.
The question may eventually be: Is it possible for Donald Trump to shed this nagging issue without his impeachment?

  • Playing politics

The state of politics in Bedford County is that if you want to get elected to the Board of Supervisors you have to be endorsed by the Republican Party.
That’s why, for the second election in a row, a primary will likely determine who gets elected to the board.
Party politics should not be at play when it comes to local officials such as the supervisors.

  • We must defend our arctic claims

May 9 is Great Victory Day in Russia. It celebrates the end of the Great Fatherland War, the European phase of what we call World War II. It marks the day Nazi Germany surrendered. The instruments of surrender were signed on the night of May 8, 1945, but the Russians celebrate Great Victory Day on May 9 because it was already after midnight, Moscow time, when the documents were signed.

  • For many, it’s Watergate all over again

Last week, Donald Trump did his best impression of Richard Nixon yet, firing the respected FBI Director who just happened to be investigating him, and then “explaining” it about five or six different ways.
Yes, the Greek tragedy that operates out of the Oval Office – thanks to “angry whites” – took on possibly historic new dimensions with the latest crazed antics of this bizarre regime.

  • Be safe out there

National Safe Boating Week is May 20-26.
As with any such designation, the week is to serve as a reminder of what is important all year long. With Memorial Day upon us, marking the unofficial beginning of the summer season, it’s always important to take note of safety precautions when out on your boats and other crafts.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) is using this week to remind all boaters to stay safe this summer, and always wear a life jacket while on the water.
