Today's Opinions

  • A new culture of leadership

The American Idea – it’s what guided our Founders in creating a system of self-government. It’s at the root of American innovation, and the push by generation after generation to go places we have not before gone. The American Idea is about opportunity and freedom to prosper. As a Congress and as a nation, this Idea is something we cannot afford to ignore.

  • Let’s not fall into a Syrian sinkhole

There is no sadder place on Earth today than Syria. It is not easy to correctly describe the suffering that has gone on for several years in that country.
A civil war against the autocratic regime of President Bashir Assad has produced hundreds of thousands of deaths, and has forced millions to leave their homes.
Much of the world is mystified over what to do about it. It’s also difficult to accept what may well be the truth about it: There’s little that any country can realistically do.

  • It’s too late for no-fly zones

As I’ve mentioned before, President Barack Obama’s conduct of foreign policy gives me grave concern because I believe he is incompetent. His unwillingness to spend money on necessary defense projects along with his willingness to repeatedly reduce the size of the Army is another cause for grave concern.

  • Soering again

Let’s hope Gov. Terry McAuliffe isn’t as irresponsible as Tim Kaine, the last Democrat to serve as Governor of the Commonwealth, when it comes to considering the outlandish request by convicted double murderer Jens Soering to be transferred to a prison in Germany to serve his term.

    Fighting for freedom

I look at the pictures of those tempest-tossed, huddled masses crowding onto the teeming shores of Europe. Many look like young men of fighting age.
I read about the illegal immigrants, again, many of whom are men of fighting age, who come across our southern border. And I consider other options.

  • eto of troops must not stand

They protect and defend – spending months away from home and loved ones, risking their lives for the cause of freedom. The sacrifice of the U.S. Armed Forces is great, and these men and women in uniform know all too well the danger they face. They know it’s not a game, and shouldn’t be treated as one. Ensuring our military has the resources they need to operate effectively and protect the American people is nothing to be delayed or held hostage by one signature.
