    Thankful for support

December 2010 marked our fifth year of providing Christmas assistance to low-income families in Bedford City and Bedford County.  Each year, I gain precious memories of events related to our mission of serving low-income families in a dignified and respectful manner.  When thinking about Christmas  2010, I can also be thankful and grateful as I remember what did not happen.

  • Looking ahead to the 112th Congress

This week marks the official start to the 112th Congress.  Members of this new Congress, including myself, will be officially sworn into office by the new Speaker of the House, John Boehner.  We face many challenges as we enter into this historic session, including out of control government spending, record unemployment numbers, and many others.  These issues touch the lives of every American.

  • Time to file claims for 2010 medical expenses

  • Haley Barbour’s Southern fried mess

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour is very proud of his “Southern heritage.” It’s something he wears on his sleeve.

States that have been “Democratic” strongholds lost population.

    Appreciates stand

In reference to the recent School Board vote on the name of the Winter Holiday, thank you Mickey Vanderwerker
-for standing up for those principles on which our country was founded: religious tolerance and separation of church and state.
-for acknowledging that there are those in Bedford of different faiths who count.
-for valuing the ever more diverse nature of our precious community of Bedford.

  • It has been an honor to serve the people of the fifth district in the 111th Congress

Last week, I left the US Congress after a final legislative act – unanimous passage of my bill to make sure that no American soldier is welcomed home from duty with a foreclosure notice. For the next two years, our heroes in uniform will be protected from foreclosure for at least 9 months after a tour of duty.
