Today's Opinions

  • Giving thanks

May each of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving as we remember the One to whom all thanks should be offered.
        • Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34

  • Filling Jim Vest’s shoes

Early last month, I wrote about how much Town Council will miss Jim Vest. I also mentioned my hope that Council would choose somebody who could fill Jim’s shoes.
I’m glad to say Council has done that. Their decision, last week, to appoint Bob Carson to fill the vacant seat was a wise one.

  • Shame on ‘Christians’ supporting Roy Moore

National Republicans are horrified that their party has to go to the polls in Alabama Dec. 12 with Roy Moore on the ballot in a U.S. Senate race.
Perhaps by now he’s been removed or has stepped down. But the real subject here is the way “Christian conservatives” will support any moral wretch out there as long as he’s allegedly “God-fearing” and against the only two things that matter: abortion rights and gay marriage.

  • On being thankful

    By James F. Burns
    Retired professor
    University of Florida

Some surviving family writings from the 1800s provide perspective on being thankful for a wide variety of things.  Thus we may be thankful:

    For natural beauty—Cumberland Gap, 1895

  • Letters 11/22/17

    ‘It’s Alabama isn’t it?’

I write to take exception to Rick Howell’s article concerning Roy Moore of Alabama (Nov. 8, 2017). His comment, “it’s Alabama isn’t it?” paint all the people of that state with the same brush.
How can a person treat all the people from any given area or state the same? Perhaps Mr. Howell has carried out his own opinion poll of Alabama. Who knew?

    Simple gun
    control

I own a lever action 22 cal. rifle and a 12 ga. pump shot gun. That said, I cannot support the
    NRA and its concerns.
How do you make an assault rifle into a hunting rifle? With a six shot clip. The numbers of persons impacted by these shooter incidents, are directly related to the large capacity clips used to inflict maxim harm. All clips should have to be permanently modified to a limit of six rounds.

  • Defending Protestant Christianity

Upon returning from a wonderful vacation trip to the Rocky Mountains, where we admired God’s magnificent creation, waiting for us was Rick Howell’s “Religion Often Keeps People Backward” in the Bedford Bulletin.
I will only defend Protestant Christianity and list a few of its forward accomplishments in America:
Author, Ben Hart points out that 98% of the colonists were professing Protestant Christians. The percentage was the same at the time of the War for Independence.

  • Huge Dem victory repudiates Trump

“Virginia rejects your hateful politics, Mr. Trump. This isn’t a wave; it’s a tsunami.”
So wrote the New York Times on the morning of Nov. 8, after Democrats Ralph Northam, Justin Fairfax and Mark Herring not only stormed to victory across the state, but led their House of Delegates candidates to shatter the GOP’s 32-vote advantage.
