  • Water Safety Notes from SML Water Safety Council

Smith Mountain Lake and the surrounding area provide many different recreational activities both in and around water.

  • A very embarrassing time now

Our clownish president has managed to achieve the lowest approval rating ever for any president after six months in office. Only 36 percent of respondents polled said they approved of his job performance; the disapproval rating was near 60 percent.
So, you know his response, right? Yep, he sent a tweet, and he called it “not too bad.” Sometimes, it’s just difficult to believe that this particular individual could actually be president.

  • No easy solutions

While “Democrats” focus on hobbling President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda, the rest of the world hasn’t gone away.
On the international front, President Trump has had some successes. He has nearly defeated Islamic State. The “caliphate” has been nearly destroyed — the fun-loving bearded unholy warriors have been driven out of  Mosul, in Iraq, and are losing ground in Raqqa, in Syria. Islamic State’s courageous leader seems to be in hiding.

  • All thumbs

Thumbs up: Bedford County School Board
Thumbs up to the Bedford County School Board for voting to give Superintendent Dr. Douglas Schuch another three years at the helm of the school system.
Dr. Schuch came to Bedford in the midst of a financial downturn that severely affected the money available at the local, state and federal levels. Dr. Schuch helped lead the school system through those tough times of lost jobs and closed schools while continuing to look ahead.

    A rush job

Understanding Health Care, which I don’t fully, or nearly fully or mostly at all.
One might assume, politicians would have invited representatives from some of the 58 countries that DO have universal health care, to make suggestions for the framing our countries Health Care program. Or, the same politicians might have held town hall meetings BEFORE the ink was wet, to secure constituents input in prioritizing the programs elements most important to them.

  • Electrical shock drowning

    By Tom Merriman,
    SML Water Safety Council member

A story about the danger of Electrical Shock Drowning (ESD) was on the national television news recently due to a fatality at an Alabama lake. It’s an important topic to anyone who cares about the safety of loved ones, and that includes all of us!

  • Militarism exerts a pernicious influence

Fifty years ago this April 4, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stepped to the podium at New York City’s Riverside Baptist Church. His subject was the Vietnam War.
Although it wouldn’t have surprised him to know it, King could not know he was entering the exact last year of his life. He would be assassinated in another city on April 4, 1968.
