  • Not mowing brush anymore

    By Albert Robe
    Bedford

The town of Bedford is a great place to live.  My family moved here 28 years ago and this is “home” to us.  I take pride in saying that I live in or am from Bedford, Virginia.
With that said, I come to the point of this letter.  From time to time, I hear of or read an article concerning the need for more tourism in Bedford.  It is at this point that I have become frustrated and/or confused as to a possible cause for this.

  • Education without regimentation

Schools across America are back in session. Bedford County opened its schools for the new school year on Aug. 15. A few school districts opened earlier and a few later.

    We have never been safe

Regarding Mr. Barnhart’s comments in “We are no longer safe”  (8-24-2016); when have we ever been completely “safe”? Is a terrorist attack possible? Of course. Is it any more probable than your being in a car accident or run over in the grocery store parking lot, not really. Life is a risk.

  • Fifth District small businesses are our economic engine

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

  • The American flag

    By James F. Burns

“I’ve been to the moon. I’ve been burned. But more often I’m honored. I’m your American flag.”

  • Trump has no immigration policy

What first brought Donald Trump to our attention last year was his racist shrieks about how “Mexico is killing us,” and “not sending us their best.”
“Rapists and thieves,” he said, are what most illegal immigrants are, and that he would “build a wall” and make Mexico pay for it.

  • Keeping tabs on you

Today’s kids can’t imagine a time when people didn’t carry a telephone with them, on their person, everywhere they go. Today’s smart phones are actually hand-held computers with many times more computing power than machines that filled specially air conditioned rooms, 30 years ago,.
I don’t have a smart phone or any kind of cell phone. I don’t want one and can’t imagine what earthly use a cell phone would be to me.

  • A good learning experience

We love receiving letters to the editor and we strive to assure every locally written letter gets printed. Of course, we aren’t going to print anything that’s libelous or obscene and we do insist that letters address public issues. Letters that fall in these limited “we won’t print that” categories are rare.
