Today's Opinions

  • Maintaining a commitment to individual liberties

Throughout America’s history, our country has been engaged in a profound debate on the limits of government. In the Federalist Papers, the Founders argued passionately for a federal government that would protect the American people from foreign threats. At the same time, they struggled to create a structure to contain and control that government in order to protect the God-given rights of the American people. In drafting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, they maintained a careful balance between preserving civil liberties and protecting our citizens from enemy threats.

  • Giving thanks to our men and women in uniform

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

As we observe Memorial Day, we remember with gratitude all of those brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives while defending our great nation.  To all of those who are and have been members of our armed forces – thank you for all that you have given up in the name of American liberty.

    Wasted money

Hurray for Sheriff Brown. He has received another award, gotten his picture in the paper for more undeserved recognition.
The article goes on to say that the award is given “to an individual in recognition of their contributions to and support of the National Sheriff’s Association President.” This means you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.

    What about
    Otter River?

As the Bedford County School Board moves to make cuts in it's budget, again   more schools are facing the real probability of closing next year.  This time it will either be Thaxton Elementary or Bedford Primary that will be axed by the board.

    ‘The lessons of Ferguson, Missouri’

I have been doing so well.
I read the “Liberal Agenda”, take a deep breath, put the paper down, and go about my life without responding to it. But I can only take so many lies.

    Lift restrictions

Since the Franklin County Board of Supervisors are the elected representatives for the Franklin County Districts, we feel it most important to bring a significant problem to their attention. Many of us, after enjoying many years on our 22,000-acre Resort Lake, find ourselves unable to sell our homes.

  • The facts of life

Within the next month, the Bedford County School Board will most likely decide on which other school it will close at the end of this school year.
The board already voted to close Body Camp Elementary in the Staunton River attendance zone and either Bedford Primary or Thaxton Elementary will likely be chosen as the school to close in the Liberty zone.
        The decision won’t be easy.
