Today's Opinions

  • The reason why

Last week Bedford Democrats invited all of those running for a Board of Supervisors seat to attend their meeting and make their views known. Two of the candidates showed up—a third had planned to attend but couldn’t because of a medical issue.
The others declined. At least one of those who didn’t attend stated their reason was because they were seeking the Republican nomination.

  • Better change now before it’s too late

One of the fascinating things about the denizens of the “Democratic” Party’s extreme-left wing swamp is the way they attack conservative critics of President Barack Obama’s efforts to negotiate a deal, any deal even if it’s a bad deal, with Iran on nuclear weapons. In their parlance, conservative critics of President Obama are war mongers. They claim we want to start a war.

  • Run, Bernie run: Defend the middle class

Vermont’s independent U.S. Senator confirmed last week what many have suspected: Bernie Sanders will be a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016.
If you don’t follow politics as intensely as I do, it’s possible you’ve never heard of him. But that’s going to change very soon.
Once known as “the socialist mayor of Burlington,” Vermont, Sanders was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012.

    The town we need

We apparently now have an increase in our Town real estate taxes for the coming fiscal year.    The Town may need this increase, but how can we keep increasing taxes and at the same time cutting needed access to our Landfill and other services. The cuts started some years ago by cutting the hours of operation.

    Day of Silence

The educators I know are dedicated to the children with whom they have been entrusted.  They put in countless hours and are under appreciated.   Some at the middle and high school level are being held hostage by the word “anti-bullying.”
Educators, parents and grandparents need to have their radar up as The Day of Silence occurs every April since the early 2000s.  This year it was Friday, April 17.

    What is legal?

On a recent local TV news cast, a Bedford Co. lady was given a ticket by a Bedford Co Sheriff’s deputy for driving a car with tinted windows.
A few weeks later, a recent story in the Bedford Bulletin featured a story about two police cars being wrapped in purple to highlight domestic violence. To the best of my knowledge, to put a wrap on the body of a vehicle is legal in Va; however, to put either tint or a wrap on the windows of a vehicle is not legal in Va. as it impairs one’s vision.

    Crowded
    middle schools

Forest Middle has been crowded for years and zone transfers to that school are closed.
Now with the closing of Thaxton Elm., Bedford Middle will be over 95 percent of capacity. Zone transfers to Bedford Middle are now closed as well.
With the addition of next year’s sixth graders from Thaxton, and the current sixth graders moving up to 7th grade, Bedford Middle is maxed out.
