  • Get out and vote

hough the statewide elections haven’t generated a lot of excitement in this area, the local town council race in Bedford has been adding to the interest.
In most years, town council elections take place with little fanfare. Many times the number of candidates on the ballot matches exactly the number of seats open. That is the case in the three, four-year term seats being contested—incumbents Robert Wandrei, James Vest and Steve Rush are running for those.

  • Don’t cast your vote for greed

When Americans go to the polls on Tuesday, many may not even realize that they are in a contest with a feature of our country that seems to be getting worse: greed.
There’s a reason that greed is called one of “the seven deadly sins.” But what, precisely, is greed? I shall quote from the Wikipedia listing on the subject:

  • The Good Fight

    By John T. Briscoe
    Thaxton
Member, Republican unit committee of Bedford

It’s never the wrong time to do the right thing.
The recent vote by the Republican unit committee to hold its members who are also elected officials accountable is a perfect example. Although it has been wrongly attributed to the “Tea Party,” that is not true. I authored and submitted the resolution. I am a  member of the Republican unit committee and I stand by its message.

  • Stop robbing Peter to pay Paul

    By Curry W Martin
    District 2 Supervisor

I have been a true Republican for 48 years.
I have been an elected official for Bedford County District 2 for 10 months. I have not and will not ever answer to any special interest groups. I was elected by the people of District 2 to represent them.

  • Will the real Mark Warner please stand up

    By Ray L. Garland

Spin is the essence of modern politics.
If occurs when mass media and politicians take a real event like Hurricane Katrina and create a narrative thought to be helpful to Democrats or Republicans. This becomes revealed truth to those who don’t have time to read a good newspaper or think for themselves, against which all the saints could argue in vain. Sen. Mark Warner is a master of spin and it has served him well.

  • A waste of time

Excuse me but …I have to share the frustration from someone who was invited to a Bedford County Public School for “Grand-Parents Day” recently. (10/07/2014).

  • A common sense response to Ebola in America

If you had never heard of Ebola before, chances are that you have now. Ebola, a serious and often fatal virus, has made its way to the United States; but that’s not a reason to panic. Ebola has been present in Africa since the 1970’s, and can only be transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person. The current outbreak in West Africa has severely affected the countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, but it is important to remember that these countries have much weaker health care and sanitation systems than those in the United States.

  • We must restore common sense to Washington

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

As I travel around Virginia’s Fifth District, I constantly hear from constituents who are astounded and upset by the manner in which the federal government operates at times.  They are often irritated by the misuse of taxpayer funds and the poor management of federal agencies.
