  • Remembering a great liberal journalist

2014 is a year of profound anniversaries of events that changed America for the better during the Civil Rights movement.
It's the 50th anniversary of “Freedom Summer” in Mississippi, a brave and successful effort where young people from across the nation descended upon a primitive and dangerous place to help black residents achieve their right to vote.
Their work did not end without tragedy, as three civil rights workers were murdered by local rednecks.

    Doing nothing has
    consequences

The Bedford Bulletins editorial of July 2 on immigration reform stated,”in fact, the only reason Congress won’t take action on immigration reform now is because of the flood of illegal immigrants coming across the border right now-most of them children...the leadership was ready to act.”

    Clearing up the
    confusion

Thank you for supporting Bower Center for the Arts and the Wharton Society by attending Dr. Bower’s Annual Crawfish Boil. As always, the food, music and ambiance were outstanding. Unfortunately, there was some confusion and misunderstanding at this year’s Crawfish Boil, which we want to clear up.

    The future of
    agriculture

I write this out of deep concern for Bedford County’s agricultural future.
Our family owns a 594 acre farm in the Big Island area; this land has been in our family and farmed for more than 150 years. We love Bedford County, its beauty and its rich history. Zoning regulations should not be changed in order to allow these industrial farming operations to move into the county.

    Reflections of a Virginia
    country boy

How much longer will Senators Kaine and Warner and fellow Congressmen allow the gross over reach of the President and his Executive Departments?

    Where were the local bands?

I am so proud to be a part of the wonderful Bedford Community.   The celebration and honors for our veterans this past week was awe  inspiring.  I can’t say enough about the staff and volunteers at the D-Day Memorial.  They  do a fabulous job year around, but they outdid themselves last week.

  • 70th anniversary of D-Day renews our profound commitment to our veterans

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

Last week, we commemorated the 70th Anniversary of the largest seaborne invasion in our history, which took place on D-Day.  In honor of the anniversary of this fateful day, I participated in the National D-Day Memorial Commemoration in Bedford to commemorate the Anniversary of the Allied invasion of occupied France.
