Today's Opinions

  • He missed the ball; but now he has a ring

Steve Bartman now has a Chicago Cubs World Series ring.
The Cubs organization offered the ring to the team’s infamous fan as a gesture of goodwill and an attempt to “provide closure on an unfortunate chapter of the story that has perpetuated throughout our quest to win a long-awaited World Series.”

  • Use good sense

Things continue to be tense in East Asia. Last week two Chinese jet fighters came dangerously close to a U. S. EP-3 Orion spy plane. The spy plane was patrolling 80 miles out to sea from Qingdao, a city on the East China Sea.

  • Is Donald Trump mentally ill?

It’s been common for quite some time now to hear many people dismiss Donald Trump and his bizarre antics by just saying, “Oh, he’s crazy.”
But now the idea has taken on more impetus after his recent persecutions of people who work for him, and his deeply weird, angry political speech before a crowd of Boy Scouts and their families.

  • Jamboree travesty

    By Robert J. Byers

I don’t blame the Boy Scouts for President Donald Trump’s bizarre speech at the National Jamboree in West Virginia on Monday.
The U.S. president is, after all, the honorary president of the Scouts. If he wants to speak at the National Jamboree, it would be hard to say no.

  • All thumbs

Thumbs up: Bedford County School Board
Thumbs up to the Bedford County School Board for voting to give Superintendent Dr. Douglas Schuch another three years at the helm of the school system.
Dr. Schuch came to Bedford in the midst of a financial downturn that severely affected the money available at the local, state and federal levels. Dr. Schuch helped lead the school system through those tough times of lost jobs and closed schools while continuing to look ahead.

  • No easy solutions

While “Democrats” focus on hobbling President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda, the rest of the world hasn’t gone away.
On the international front, President Trump has had some successes. He has nearly defeated Islamic State. The “caliphate” has been nearly destroyed — the fun-loving bearded unholy warriors have been driven out of  Mosul, in Iraq, and are losing ground in Raqqa, in Syria. Islamic State’s courageous leader seems to be in hiding.

  • A very embarrassing time now

Our clownish president has managed to achieve the lowest approval rating ever for any president after six months in office. Only 36 percent of respondents polled said they approved of his job performance; the disapproval rating was near 60 percent.
So, you know his response, right? Yep, he sent a tweet, and he called it “not too bad.” Sometimes, it’s just difficult to believe that this particular individual could actually be president.
