    Fundraising help needed

        For over 10 years the Saunders Volunteer Fire Company has been hosting the Independence Day Fireworks and Celebration at Parkway Marina. It is our major fund raising project. Thousands of residents and guests to the lake participate in the celebration and view the fireworks. Expenses for this event have far exceeded our expectations and we need your help to continue.

  • Open up D-Day Foundation and let sunshine in

    It is time to open up the National D-Day Memorial Foundation, add new members to the foundation’s board, and let sunshine in on its planning, operations, and finances.

        For years, the foundation has operated as a close-hold, private organization, run by a self-selected board of directors, which, in turn, selects a president. The foundation has held information about its plans, operations, and finances close to the vest.

  • War’s end should be quicker

        Now that the real reason for going into Afghanistan is behind us, it should only be logical to escalate our exit from a war that 60 percent of Americans no longer support anyway.

        The Obama Administration had already planned to begin withdrawing troops this July, with plans to be out entirely by 2014.

  • My gratitude to an old soldier

        We said goodbye to one more of the Bedford Boys last week. Ray Noell was originally a member of Company A, although he had been transferred out of the company in 1942 after Capt. Taylor Fellers sent him and a couple of others off to officer candidate school. He came ashore in Normandy two days after D-Day and commanded a platoon in another company in the brutal hedgerow fighting.

  • Too much

    “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.”

  • Veterans' widow pension benefits

        The topics for this month are the widow befits programs  of which there are two program, each distinctively different and each  with its own eligibility criteria.

        The first to be addressed is the Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) program.  For a survivor to be eligible for DIC compensation the veteran’s death must have resulted from one of the following causes;
        1. A disease or injury incurred or aggravated in the line of duty while on active duty or active duty for training.
