  • Better to just let him rant

Tensions in the relations between Turkey and Israel, which have been increasingly sour over the past six years, took a turn for the worse last month after the United Nations affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself by maintaining a blockade on Hamas-controlled Gaza.

    Speak up

I have great concerns for the direction of Bedford County Public Schools. AYP scores have dropped over the years to the point that no elementary school in the Liberty Zone made AYP.
Enrollment is declining, think parents are looking at these scores? Amazingly the scores declined at the same time that the “Staffing Standards” were adopted. This adoption reduced our teaching staff, all the while increasing the Central Office. Where are the “Staffing Standards” for Central Office?

  • Remembering September 11th

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

As we all come together today – joining with our fellow Virginians and all Americans – we remember the horrific events that took place ten years ago on September 11th, 2001.

By all accounts September 11, 2001 started out as a typical Tuesday. Most Americans were simply going about their daily lives -- children were headed to school, folks were commuting to work. And in that moment life for all Americans was forever changed.

  • Obama takes initiative on jobs

President Obama has lately had either bad publicity or watched on the sidelines as most of the media’s attention has been on Republican candidates for his job.

But all that changed with his Sept. 8 speech to a Joint Session of Congress. The president laid out his plan for a $447 billion jobs program that would put people back to work on the nation’s infrastructure of roads and bridges.

    Timing of repairs

I know that the state has to watch its budget with the economy as it is these days. This is especially true with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). That is why it was very puzzling when I saw the repaving being done on eastbound US 460 around Bedford.  It is not that it wasn’t needed, but the timing of it being done.
