  • The U.S. Senate: A barrier to economic growth

  • Why third parties fail in America

Two years ago, a group of wealthy, politically-minded civic activists formed an organization they would call “Americans Elect 2012.” Led by such people as Peter Ackerman, a financial executive in New York, the group laid out some ambitious plans.
Determined to capitalize on dissatisfaction with politics in general, and particularly frustration with the Democratic and Republican parties, the group planned to attract a major “centrist” presidential candidate, and get that person on the ballot everywhere.

  • A politically motivated decision

The weekend before last I read an interview with Major General  H.R. McMaster in the Wall Street Journal’s weekend edition. The interview reminded me of the grave mistake that President Barack Obama is making by his determination to stick to his arbitrary date for withdrawing American troops from Afghanistan regardless of what the situation demands.
The article points out that we have been making progress since President Obama’s surge reached its peak. The article states:

  • Wear It—Stay Safe!

With Memorial Day weekend upon us, there will be plenty of opportunities to have fun and stay cool in the water.
We’re in the middle of National Safe Boating Week (May 19 – 25) which serves as a good reminder for everyone to stay safe while enjoying the water.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is reminding all boaters to remember some important safety tips this boating season.
One of the most important – always wear a life jacket while on the water.

With the economy and the job market the way it is today, we need to make ourselves stand out in order to be considered for a job.  One way we can stand out is through education, however going to college is expensive, and we see the price of a college education rises each day.

  • Preserving the American dream

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

This past week, I had the great honor of addressing a group of 36 new American citizens who took their oath of citizenship at the Seventh Annual Red Hill Naturalization Ceremony in Brookneal.

On that day, at the former home and resting place of one of our Founders, Patrick Henry, those 36 individuals celebrated the end of a long journey to becoming a United States citizen and the beginning of a new life as an American citizen.

  • Standing with Israel in the pursuit of peace

The situation in the Middle East is exceedingly complex and instability continues to pose a threat to our security and the security of the entire global community. With an enhanced security threat from Iran, uncertainty in Egypt’s future relationship with Israel, escalating violence in Syria and the Palestinian government’s alliance with the terrorist group Hamas and their attempts to obtain UN recognition of a Palestinian state without seeking a peaceful resolution with Israel first, it is increasingly important that the United States stand firmly with our ally Israel.

When I began to ask people for support in opposing the Harmony Development, I was told by many that it was little use; the decision had already been made.
