  • A time to give thanks

Recently the eyes of the country have been focused on the hotly contested Presidential election and our economic downturn, but it is important to remember that as a nation, we have many reasons to give thanks.  Each year, across Virginia and throughout the country, Americans set aside a special day to express gratitude for the many blessings we have received.

  • Letters

The Bedford Museum and Genealogical Library would like to use the Thanksgiving holiday to thank all the people who have served to protect our country and our rights.

Ben Melton has donated to the Museum one of his uniforms that was used in Iraq. This completes our collection of uniforms from every major conflict including the War of 1812.

  • Special veterans benefits

The veteran currently receiving VA service-connected disability compensation or the veteran and eligibility family members in receipt of benefits under the Improved Pension Program may also be entitled to benefits provided in two other programs. The receipt of service-connected disability compensation or pension benefits however, does not automatically entitle the veteran to receive benefits from these two special programs. In most cases the veteran must submit a claim for benefits under either of these programs.

  • A great wave of hope lifted Obama

When Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois captured the presidency on Nov. 4, it was the biggest slap in the face for American racism since the Emancipation Proclamation and Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and career.

  • Social Security Administration alleviates bureaucratic inefficiencies
  • Hot air wins the day

Last week, 52 percent of American voters chose slick talk over proven leadership.

Maybe I’ll be proven wrong. Maybe Barack Obama will turn out to be a fine president. Or, perhaps he’ll end up being a mediocre Jimmy Carter. Or, we may be so sick of the change he’ll bring that we’ll wish him good riddance in 2012.

  • Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up to everyone who took the time out last Tuesday to cast their ballots in the local, state and national elections. The 5th District Congressional District race shows just how much your vote counts. As of Tuesday morning that race was separated by just 745 votes, with Democratic challenger Tom Perriello leading incumbent Republican Virgil Goode. If that margin stands, it will work out to less than three votes per precinct being the difference in the race. That's not very many, considering some 126,917 eligible voters didn't show up to vote Tuesday in the District.

    Wet and Wine Noses

Wine and Wet Noses did go together quite well at Savoy-Lee Winery!

We want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who came out in support ofAll-American Mutt Rescue and the animals of Bedford County and Central Virginia that have a need to be rescued, rehomed, and loved forever.

It turned out to be a beautiful day weather-wise and it was a very heartwarming day to see so many pets participating in the day with their families. It was wonderful to see so many of our former fosters with their new forever families.
