  • A taxing time

If you?re reading this and haven?t yet filed your tax return for 2007 you?ve either filed for an extension or...

    You?re late!

I hate filing taxes. I hated going through the process even when I was going to get some of my money back. That reality, however, at least eased the pain.

But I especially hated it this week.

Because of some one-time issues that kicked in this year I apparently owe more money. That just rubs salt in the wound all the more.

  • Letters

    Response to letter

Mr. Frank West of Moneta refers to Billy Hackworth's recent editorial as "ranting and drivel" which means to drool, slaver and foolish. After re-reading Mr. Hackworth's editorial, I fail to see the connection. Mr. Hackworth is letting the taxpayer of Bedford County know where a lot of their tax dollars are going. What's foolish about that?

Does Mr. West have a "ranting and drivel" problem? Or does he know something about Sheriff Brown the county citizens need to know? You be the judge.

  • Service connected disability compensation

Service connected disability compensation is a monetary benefit paid to veterans who are disabled by an injury or disease incurred or aggravated during active military service.

These disabilities are considered to be service-connected. Disability compensation varies with the degree of disability and the number of dependents, and is paid monthly. Veterans with certain service connected disabilities may be eligible for additional special monthly compensation. The benefits are not subject to federal or state income tax.

  • Scrapping the tax code

With spring underway, warmer weather is returning, the days are growing longer, and everything is in bloom. Unfortunately, the arrival of spring also kicks off a second and largely unwelcomed season. This season is marked by piles of forms, confusing instructions, and the prospect of turning your hard-earned money over to the government - tax season.

  • More Americans killed in U. S. by illegal aliens than have died in Iraq

Over the last five years, 4,000 U. S. soldiers have died fighting for freedom from Islamic extremists in Iraq. This figure has received major news coverage on nearly every major media outlet. However, the untold story that the media does not focus on is the number of persons in the United States who have been killed by illegal aliens. Statistics compiled by Representative Steve King of Iowa show that the number killed by illegal aliens since September 11th exceeds the number of soldiers that we have lost in Iraq.

  • It really did not take that much effort to change three lives

Last summer I applied to the Bedford Humane Society to be a foster family for a dog. For years the statistics about euthanized animals in shelters and the “Good Home Wanted” posters plastered about businesses saddened me. It was all so overwhelming. What could one person do?

I found out. In late September, Rascal arrived at my home. A rangy, 7 year old mixed breed he immediately made himself at home in my yard. My dog Misha accepted him as a guest.

  • The GOP’s sense of doom

It’s been a tough political year for Virginia Republican Congressman Tom Davis, and he fears things will only get worse for his party.

For Davis, the personal is political. Last year, his wife, Jeannemarie Devolites-Davis, was beaten for re-election in her bid for another term in the state senate.

It was bad enough that both Davises had to suffer that loss, but it soon became apparent in the weeks after Election Day that Rep. Davis’ trial balloon for a U.S. Senate candidacy was being shot down by the purists in his party.

  • A naive foreign policy

It's rare that I agree with a "Democrat" and it's even rarer that I agree with Hillary Clinton. She is, however, absolutely correct in one of her criticisms of Barack Obama. Obama would pursue a very naive foreign policy.

Obama has said that one of his first acts as president would be to meet with the leaders of countries such as Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, Syria and Iran. These meetings would be without preconditions and the offers would be made without any advance diplomacy.

I can imagine the letter he may write to Venezuela's President Hugo Chvez.

    Dear Hugo,
