    Driven to
    distraction

Just as sure as the sun rises in the east, two or three times a year Billy Hackworth writes to the Bedford Bulletin complaining about Sheriff Mike Brown. Why is that? He may have some good points, but they are obscured by his obsession with and vendetta for Sheriff Brown.

    National Dog Bite Prevention Week

In April, the United States Postal Service promoted National Dog Bite Prevention Week.
I am writing to ask our customers to extend their efforts and help make this “National Dog Bite Prevention Year.”
Pet owners’ efforts are critical when you consider the number of Postal Service employees attacked by dogs last year reached 6,755 - more than 200 higher than the year before.

  • Don’t be complacent

Last month I saw a news story about Russia’s plan to build new class of aircraft carriers. Right now, Russia only has one carrier, the Kuznetsov.

    Hope for the Heartland

Early this spring, massive wildfires swept thru the rangelands of western Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado. Hundreds of thousands of acres of pasture, thousands of miles of fence, thousands of cattle, numbers of homes were burned and 7 people lost their lives. Local families with friends and relatives that live in that area kept them informed of the situation. I would like to give some credit to the many people that helped out in this awful situation.

    Setting the
    example

In September I went to the funeral for the police officer in Shelby, North Carolina. I am an uncle of officer Tim Brackeen’s wife. At first I hesitated to go as I expected that the crowd and the traffic would be tremendous. After hearing that a few family members from the Roanoke Valley decided not to go, I made a last minute decision to go to support my sister and my niece.

    Time to TNR

There’s been great progress at the Bedford County Animal Shelter in recent years that is a tribute to the staff, area animal welfare groups, and residents.
The number of animals going in has gone down, and the number of animals going out alive has gone up.

    Appreciation for response

On behalf of Lake Christian Ministries board members, cherished volunteers and the hundreds of SML-area neighbors who we assist each week, I would like to publicly express our awe and sincere appreciation for the Lake Community’s response during the “Roanoke Valley Gives” on-line fundraising event last week.

Seeking 22nd VA House of Delegates Democratic candidates

As of yet, Kathy Byron is unopposed for the 22nd Virginia House of Delegates seat.  The Democratic Committees of the 22nd would like to change that by coming up with viable Democratic candidates and we hope you can help.
