Today's Opinions

  • Confronting the ISIL threat

The United States is a symbol of liberty across the globe. We enjoy freedoms like no other nation in the world, and we must remain ever vigilant against threats from aggressive terrorist groups that would seek to destroy our very way of life, harm our citizens at home and abroad, or attack our allies.

  • We must work together to combat the threat of ISIL

    By Congressman Robert Hurt

On Wednesday, the President addressed our nation regarding the terrorist group, Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Coming just one day before the thirteenth anniversary of that tragic morning of September 11, 2001, it was essential that he engage with the American people about this very real, pervasive threat.

  • Liberals can be a lot of fun

Rick Howell doesn’t need to worry about providing me with material for my column. King Barack I, in the White House, Terry McAwful, in the governor’s mansion and various other prominent denizens of the liberal swamp create such a wealth of opportunity for conservative commentary that I often find myself having difficulty deciding what one topic I’ll address. However, taking jabs at Mr. Howell’s columns is such great fun that I’m often unable to resist the temptation.

  • Meet Bernie Sanders, Vermont populist

“Ready for Hillary” is a PAC (political action committee) that has been up and running for quite a while, organizing supporters and raising money for her expected presidential campaign.
But there are progressive forces in her party who like to call themselves (ourselves, I should say!) “the democratic wing of the Democratic Party.”
Hillary knows this, and most progressives don’t have a problem at all getting behind her legacy of long-time support for liberal causes.

  • Centerfest Corner

    By Amanda Adams
    Executive Director
    Bedford Main Street, Inc.

        Dear Centertown,
On Saturday, September 27, Centerfest marks its 33rd year.
This rain or shine festival is presented by Bedford Main Street, Inc. and has grown to become one of Virginia’s largest outdoor street festivals (8,000 to 10,000 visitors).   Our family friendly event celebrates and promotes the region’s rich cultural traditions of food, art, craft and music.

  • Protecting the nation against terrorist threats

Protecting the American people from threats against the nation is the highest priority of the federal government. However, in direct contrast to this goal, the Obama Administration recently approved a final regulation to lift a 30-year prohibition on Libyans coming to the U.S. to attend flight school, to work in aviation maintenance or flight operations, or to study or seek training in nuclear science. Once Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Jeh Johnson signs this regulation, it will go into effect unless further action is taken.

  • Be aware: Drive smart

With temperatures coming down, it’s getting to be perfect weather for bicyclists, runners and those who just want a simple stroll to take to the streets and sidewalks.
It’s a great chance to get some exercise, but everyone needs to be safe.
September is Virginia Bicyclist and Pedestrian Awareness Month and DRIVE SMART Virginia and the Virginia Bicycling Federation have joined forces to make the roads safe for everyone who is out on them. The campaign encourages mutual respect on Virginia roadways.

  • It’s election time!

It’s that time of year again! It’s election time! In less than eight weeks, Americans will head off to the polls to make the vital decision of who will fill seats and the House of Representatives and the Senate. All house seats are up for reelection as well as a third of Senate seats. In Virginia, Senator Mark Warner is being challenged by Ed Gillespie.
