Today's Opinions

  • Spiritual darkness lifted Donald Trump

When Pope Francis met with our man-child president last week at the Vatican, the leader of the universal Catholic Church looked as though he’d rather be anywhere else in the universe except where he was.
Trump was grinning like the proverbial Cheshire cat, but the Pope wasn’t smiling; not at all. We know, of course, who – among the two of them – is most respected around the world, and it certainly isn’t Donald Trump.

  • Don’t hold your breath

Left-wingers looking for impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump will probably have a long wait.

  • Remembering

...Well, I believe we, the Americans of today, are ready to act worthy of ourselves, ready to do what must be done to ensure happiness and liberty for ourselves, our children, and our children’s children. And as we renew ourselves here in our own land, we will be seen as having greater strength throughout the world. We will again be the exemplar of freedom and a beacon of hope for those who do not now have freedom.

    You won’t be disappointed

I strongly urge everyone to kick off the summer season at Smith Mountain Lake with two premier performances: Lakeside Singers and the brand new Lake Pops, both sponsored by Smith Mountain Arts Council. You will not be disappointed!

  • Rebuild our Navy

The cruise missile attack on a Syrian airbase early last month was amazing. In a precision attack, the base was hit by 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles in 60 seconds. According to a Wikipedia article, 60 missiles were launched, but one fizzled and fell in the sea.
Syria was able to resume launching air strikes from the base but the advance warning we gave the Russians, so they could get their personnel out of the way, also allowed the Syrians to shield some of their aircraft, reducing the damage that was done.

  • Be safe out there

National Safe Boating Week is May 20-26.
As with any such designation, the week is to serve as a reminder of what is important all year long. With Memorial Day upon us, marking the unofficial beginning of the summer season, it’s always important to take note of safety precautions when out on your boats and other crafts.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) is using this week to remind all boaters to stay safe this summer, and always wear a life jacket while on the water.

    Faith, family and freedom

Having choices through elections is an American standard; preferring one choice does not necessarily mean that we are adamantly or rudely opposed to another.  It simply means that we prefer one for specific reasons and we make that choice.

    Driven to
    distraction

Just as sure as the sun rises in the east, two or three times a year Billy Hackworth writes to the Bedford Bulletin complaining about Sheriff Mike Brown. Why is that? He may have some good points, but they are obscured by his obsession with and vendetta for Sheriff Brown.
