Today's Opinions

  • Protecting the nation against terrorist threats

Protecting the American people from threats against the nation is the highest priority of the federal government. However, in direct contrast to this goal, the Obama Administration recently approved a final regulation to lift a 30-year prohibition on Libyans coming to the U.S. to attend flight school, to work in aviation maintenance or flight operations, or to study or seek training in nuclear science. Once Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Jeh Johnson signs this regulation, it will go into effect unless further action is taken.

  • Be aware: Drive smart

With temperatures coming down, it’s getting to be perfect weather for bicyclists, runners and those who just want a simple stroll to take to the streets and sidewalks.
It’s a great chance to get some exercise, but everyone needs to be safe.
September is Virginia Bicyclist and Pedestrian Awareness Month and DRIVE SMART Virginia and the Virginia Bicycling Federation have joined forces to make the roads safe for everyone who is out on them. The campaign encourages mutual respect on Virginia roadways.

  • It’s election time!

It’s that time of year again! It’s election time! In less than eight weeks, Americans will head off to the polls to make the vital decision of who will fill seats and the House of Representatives and the Senate. All house seats are up for reelection as well as a third of Senate seats. In Virginia, Senator Mark Warner is being challenged by Ed Gillespie.

  • Race makes the right so uncomfortable

I’m always glad to give John Barnhart material for his “Conservatively Speaking” column. I sometimes think that if I didn’t, he’d have a hard time producing one most weeks.
My column on the Michael Brown shooting certainly got a visceral reaction from some quarters. Barnhart’s predictable and knee-jerk response (pardon the redundancy) was expected.

Centerfest will be here in less than 20 days! If you aren’t excited, you should be!

  • The Congressional mail bag: What you’re saying

Each month, my office receives thousands of phone calls, letters, e-mails, and even Facebook messages from folks across the Sixth District. Many have questions about current issues before Congress while some are requesting assistance with a federal agency. Here are a few of the questions I have received in recent weeks:

  • Helping American families save for higher education

    By Congressman Robert Hurt
As students across Virginia’s Fifth District have settled into the school routine, many high school seniors are preparing to apply for college.  These preparations include more than achieving good grades and completing applications. The rising cost of higher education requires families to start planning for college years in advance, especially to pay for ever increasing tuition and other costs.

  • A liberal rush to judgement

Rick Howell’s Liberal Agenda did a great job of giving us another trip through the bat sanctuary that comprises the liberal world view.
While Mr. Howell applied a fig leaf to due process by noting that it’s up to a grand jury to decide if Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, it’s clear what he believes this grand jury should decide. He implies that justice won’t be done if the grand jury does not indict Wilson on criminal charges.
