School Board passes budget

    Employees of Bedford County Public Schools will receive their first significant salary increase in five years—a 3 percent raise—following action Tuesday night by the Bedford County School Board.

Lunch and plant sale provides...

    The Blue Ridge Garden Club’s annual lunch and plant sale drew about 150 people to Main Street United Methodist Church as the month of April closed out.

Wandrei, Carson, Stanley, Vest...

The special election for Bedford Town Council, which replaces Bedford City Council on July 1 when Bedford reverts to a town, was not a contested election. Seven candidates ran for seven seats. However, the number of votes each received made a difference. The top four vote-getters won four year terms. The other three will have to stand for reelection in 2014 if they want to stay on town council.

Bob Wandrei, Robert Carson, C. G. Stanley and Jim Vest made the top four. Wandrei got 194 votes, Carson got 184, Stanley got 171 and Vest got 170.

Public comments on new school...

    The Bedford County School Board is still looking at the possibility of constructing a new middle school near Liberty High School, but it appears any possibility of building the school on the current LHS site is gone.

Cavs edge M-Men nine

 

You can call it a moral victory.  But the Minutemen baseball crew seems quite a bit more interested in the victories that show up in the W-L standings.

Liberty played Jefferson Forest tough, once again.  But it was the crew from Forest that prevailed, sweeping its season series with the Minutemen by virtue of a 4-0 win at Liberty's Jim Cutler Field.

It comes on the heels of a 2-1 win by JF over the Minutemen at Forest.

The win kept the Cavs in contention for the Seminole District's regular season crown.

Studies will look at two sites...

    The Bedford County School Board will look at two sites to construct a new middle school in the Liberty Zone as the result of action Thursday night.
    The board unanimously approved funding for studies of a site off Wheatland Road near the Bedford Area Family YMCA and for a yet-to-be identified site near Liberty High School, off Va. 122.
    The Wheatland Road site, located south of U.S. 460, is owned by developer George Aznavorian, who has offered to donate between 35 to 40 acres for the school.

Rec plans take shape

    Plans on how recreation will be handled in the soon-to-be-established town of Bedford are beginning to take shape. A transition period will be built into the planning process as the current recreation department is dissolved with the new program eventually falling completely under the direction of the Bedford County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Finalists named for County...

    A panel of judges has selected three finalists for 2014 Bedford County Teacher of the Year.
    They are: Kathy Barton, Thaxton Elementary School; Kelly Brown, Liberty High School; and Wendy Singleton, Jefferson Forest High School.
    The overall county winner will be announced during an annual recognition dinner at Boonsboro Country Club next Tuesday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m.

    Our country was founded on the principle of God’s word because our forefathers realized that there is a superior power than that of man and because God has already defined marriage, man cannot redefine it.
    Man cannot establish same sex marriages without redefining marriage and since God’s law is superior to man’s law, our government has no authority to do so.
    Man can establish same sex unions with the same governmental benefits as married couples.
