Driver’s ed fleet has two new...

    Two 2011 Dodge Avengers will be joining Bedford Public Schools’ drivers’ education program.

    According to Dr. Mac Duis, the school division’s director of instruction, the focus of the driver’s ed program has been changed from using a driving range at Bedford Science and Technology Center to over-the-road training. This will provide a more realistic experience to the students.

Car going wrong way on US 460...

A North Carolina woman made what could have been a fatal mistake last week.

    According to Lt. Todd Foreman, of the Bedford City Police, Sergeant Robert Monk headed out on a report of an SUV driving the wrong way  on    U. S. 460 last Tuesday, May 7.

Thaxton man accused of burning...

    A Bedford man with a history of charges relating to setting fires has been charged with starting a blaze that destroyed his mother’s home Monday.
    Bedford County Sheriff’s investigators have changed Darrell Bruce Orange, 53, with arson of a residence at 1071 Murray Hollow Road in Thaxton. He lived in the residence with his mother. He is being held in the Bedford Adult Detention Center on no bond.

School board discusses new sites...

The Bedford County School Board is still looking at the possibility of constructing a new middle school near Liberty High School, but it appears any possibility of building the school on the current LHS site is gone.
Following a public hearing to discuss the three alternate plans for building the new school at the LHS property, board members distanced themselves from that proposal, choosing to begin looking for new sites, including one off US 460 in which developer George Aznavorian has offered to donate about 40 acres for the school to be built there.

BCEA: Pollard should apologize

    Two representatives of the Bedford County Education Association (BCEA) used the citizen comment period of Monday night’s supervisors’ meeting to criticize remarks that District 6 Supervisor Annie Pollard made during a meeting last month.
    Pollard, at the supervisors’ April 22 meeting, had referred to some county teachers as “a bunch of crybabies.”
    Cheryl Sprouse, president of the BCEA, called Pollard’s comments “very unprofessional and inappropriate.”

NAACP plans new spring event for...

    The Bedford Branch of the NAACP is sponsoring a new spring event, which members hope to hold every year.

    It’s their First Freedom Fund Fellowship and will take place in Centertown Bedford’s Farmers’ Market, located on Washington Street on Saturday, May 18 from 2-6 p.m.
    “We plan to have Gospel groups and a variety of different types of music,” said Ronnie Miller, the Bedford Branch’s president.

Council to advertise tax rate of...

    When Bedford reverts to town status on July 1, town residents will pay both the county real estate tax of 50 cents per $100 of assessed value and a town real estate tax.

Bedford PD shares bike safety...

    The children at the Growing Place, a pre-school run by Bedford Baptist Church, got a recent visit by the Bedford Police Department.

    The effort part of a bicycle safety program and one of the police department’s bicycle patrol officers shows up each year. This time, they got two patrol officers — Joe Dooley and Tim Stanley — along with Lt. Todd Foreman.

Austin wins firehouse primary

Terry Austin, a member of the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors is the Republican Party's nominee to replace Delegate Lacey Putney in the House of Delegates. Putney, who announced in March that he will not seek reelection, represents the 19th District which comprises Allegheny County, Botetourt County and a portion of Bedford County.

Austin won Tuesday evening's firehouse primary in a four way race which included Zachary Hatcher, of Botetourt County and Zach Martin and Jim McKelvey, of Bedford County.

BMH shows its appreciation

    April was National Volunteer Appreciation Month and Bedford Memorial Hospital thanked its volunteers with a lunch at Bedford Columns. The event also included door prizes donated by area businesses.

    Dr. Fred Conner, Bedford County Public Schools’ supervisor of career and technical education, spoke about the school division’s 50 partnership with Bedford Memorial. Conner, in turn, got some special attention from the lunch’s live entertainer.
