Juveniles charged in vandalism at middle school

On Friday, May 18 investigators with the Bedford Police Department obtained detention orders for two 14-year-old juveniles for breaking into Bedford Middle School during the early morning hours of Sunday, May 13.

Both juveniles were charged with the following: 1 count of Breaking and Entering; 1 count of Felony Property Damage; 1 count of Arson Feloniously Attempt to Burn Public Building; 1 count of Trespassing on School Property after hours.

Structure fire destroys home on White House Road

At 11:57 p.m. Tuesday night the Moneta Fire Department was dispatched to the area of White House Road and Ayers Road for a possible fire in the woods, as reported by a passerby.

Moneta Command 8 and Medic 14-8 (Bedford County Fire and Rescue career-staffed ambulance out of Moneta FD station 1) arrived in the area and began a search.

William E. Mayhew, 70, Rustburg

    William Elzar Mayhew, 70 of Rustburg, passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at his residence. He was a son of the late William Harry Mayhew and Nora Lee Burnette Mayhew.
    He is survived by his son, William E. Mayhew, Jr., two daughters, Susan Annette Mayhew, Kimberly M. Barksdale.
    Graveside Services will be conducted on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 1 PM at Morgans Baptist Church Cemetery.
    Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Huddleston.

Judge will rule on embezzlement charge against former Main Street director within three weeks

An embezzlement charge against the former director of Bedford Main Street, Inc., has been taken under advisement following a preliminary hearing in General District Court Wednesday.

Calling it “an awkward embezzlement” charge, Judge Harold Black said he will rule within three weeks on whether to certify the charge against 46-year-old Daniel A. Plattus to a Bedford grand jury.

Irene H. Spinner, 97, Bedford

    Irene H. Spinner, 97, of Bedford died May 12, 2012 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born July 2, 1914 to the late Warren and Lettie Jones Harris and the wife of the late William Monroe Spinner.
    She is survived by four sons, Leroy Spinner, Howard Spinner, James Spinner, and Bobby Spinner.
    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Mt. Rock Baptist Church, Goode. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Supervisors balk at giving schools additional $4.2M

    It’s possible that the Bedford County School Board may not receive the $3.5 million they were anticipating after all. The school board has asked for $3.5 million unspent funds from the county, plus $700,000 of  the money left over from the Jefferson Forest High School (JFHS) renovation. The board would like to use that money for maintenance.

Womanless Pageant to raise funds for Montvale Rescue Squad

    They promise to have plenty of local celebrities. They promise to be dressed as you’ve never seen them before. A couple have even promised to show some skin.

    And they promise that the Saturday, June 2 Womanless Beauty Pageant will be plenty of fun.

Man receives 30-year sentence in Goode Country Store robbery

    A Bedford man will spend 30 years in prison for charges related to the armed robbery of Goode Country Store last March.

Teacher of the Year finalists

    Three Bedford County teachers have been named as finalists for the school system’s Teacher of the Year award.

    The award will be announced at a dinner on June 7.
    The three teachers include Kristen Cunningham of Staunton River High School, Kristina Karnes from Staunton River Middle School and David Webb from Jefferson Forest High School.
