Conservatives find holy grail in Obama ‘scandals”’


    Giddy. That’s the word I’m hearing that best describes the way right-wingers have been acting since last week’s media storm about the three “scandals” supposedly plaguing the Obama administration.
    The president’s enemies, so utterly unable to bring Barack Obama down at the polls, now appear to think that they finally have something they can use against him.

Pay tribute to those who protect and serve

    I would like to take the opportunity during Law Enforcement Memorial Week to pay tribute to the men and women who protect and serve the Commonwealth, risking their lives each day to keep us safe. 
    Since the first known line-of-duty death in America, there have been more than 19,000 officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.  Tragically, 487 of those fallen heroes were serving Virginia when their lives were cut short.

    Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is a tax free monetary benefit paid to eligible survivors of military Service members who died in the line of duty or eligible survivors of Veterans whose death resulted from a service-related injury or disease.

Thaxton man sentenced on child porn charges

    A Thaxton man pleaded guilty to 11 counts of possessing child pornography, following a tip authorities received from the parents of a boy who were in some of the photos the man had.
    Police arrested Joshua Earl Grimstead, 23, on Dec. 28 of last year following a case investigated by the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

National Safe Boating Week is this week, just in time to remind us all of the need for safety as Memorial Day arrives and the summer season kicks off.
    The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) is reminding all boaters to remember some important safety tips this boating season. 
    Tops among them: to always wear a life jacket while on the water. 

Lady Cavs fall just short

 

Everybody said they had no chance.

Everybody was wrong.

The Jefferson Forest softball team earned a bite at that apple we call the Seminole District's regular-season championship, in spite of the fact the team carries seven freshmen on its roster.

The Lady Cavs fell short of the title trophy, coming tantalizingly close before falling to Rustburg, 3-0, in a nine-inning doozy of an affair.

Rec plans take shape

    Plans on how recreation will be handled in the soon-to-be-established town of Bedford are beginning to take shape. A transition period will be built into the planning process as the current recreation department is dissolved with the new program eventually falling completely under the direction of the Bedford County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Studies will look at two sites for new middle school

    The Bedford County School Board will look at two sites to construct a new middle school in the Liberty Zone as the result of action Thursday night.
    The board unanimously approved funding for studies of a site off Wheatland Road near the Bedford Area Family YMCA and for a yet-to-be identified site near Liberty High School, off Va. 122.
    The Wheatland Road site, located south of U.S. 460, is owned by developer George Aznavorian, who has offered to donate between 35 to 40 acres for the school.

Town council elected

    May 7 was a big day for elections in the Bedford area.
    Bedford City residents decided which members of the new Bedford Town Council got full four-year terms while 19th House of Delegates District Republicans selected a candidate to run for the seat of Delegate Lacey Putney. Putney, who held that seat for 52 years, chose not to seek reelection this year.
