  • The public’s option?

    For Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello the recently-passed health care reform bill is the best medicine invented since chicken soup. But Sixth District Congressman Bob Goodlatte has a different take — calling the bill a budget buster and a job killer. To him it’s nothing more than a bitter pill to have to swallow from a House controlled by Democrats.

    The House of Representatives recently passed the Affordable Health Care for America Act, which will make health care affordable for the middle class, provide security for seniors, and reduce the federal deficit. After months of listening to constituents, doctors, and seniors around the 5th District, I cast my vote in favor of this bill because we cannot sit back and let health care costs continue to crush middle-class families and our seniors.

    At the National D-Day Memorial, General of the Army George C. Marshall, VMI graduate, Roosevelt’s Army Chief of Staff and “the true organizer of victory” in Churchill’s words, is honored with a plaque in the Gray Plaza along with plaques memorializing the commanders of U.S. V and VII Corps.

        At the National D-Day Memorial, Joseph Stalin, Hitler’s early ally, who, with Hitler, invaded and dismembered Poland in 1939 thus becoming with Hitler the co-architect of WWII, is to be given a prominently located sculpture, a bust.

  • Liberty students elect a delegate

        For a while on Election night, it looked as though Lynchburg Delegate Shannon Valentine, a Democrat, had survived the slings and arrows of a very negative campaign aimed at her by Republican Scott Garrett.

        With only one precinct still not reporting, Valentine had 53 percent of the ballots cast, roughly a 1,400 vote lead. But it was not to be, because the one precinct that was out was Heritage Elementary School, where Liberty University students had been shipped out in buses to vote.

  • It’s time to build

    City of Bedford School Board member Mickey VanDerwerker asked the most relevant question during last Thursday’s Bedford County School Board meeting to discuss a long-range facilities plan for the school system: “What are we going to do about the gymnasium at Bedford Primary now?”

        But instead of answers, there are still only questions. And the sad news is the students at Bedford Primary are the ones suffering. It’s time for the county and school board to stop putting a decision off and to take steps to solve this problem.

        The president of the United States, Barak Obama, is a tyrant. There, I said it. Before you go on about what a hysterical overstatement that is, or that I am some kind of overzealous, right wing bigot, let’s look at some recent moves by the White House.

    Last week, a new version of health care reform legislation was unveiled in the U.S. House. I was pleased to see major changes in the bill that move us in the right direction. Though I was unsatisfied with the original bill, I’ve been working hard for reforms that I can support, because doing nothing would mean that premiums would double over the next decade for the middle class and small business owners. I argued that we could reduce skyrocketing premiums, bring the uninsured into the system, and reduce the federal deficit through an emphasis on prevention and increasing competition.

    During the Presidential election campaign then Senator Obama called for transparency in the legislative process, even promising that health care reform negotiations would be “televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies.”

        Actually, I wrote the above statement considering the fact that our paper comes out the day after election day. In reality, with deadlines in mind, I’m writing this before I’ve actually had a chance to go to my polling place and cast my ballot for Bob McDonnell, Bill Bolling and Ken Cuccinelli. I’m assuming that I don’t get run over by a big truck, shot by an irate “Democrat,” fall off a ladder or croak from natural causes before I get there.

  • Progress: There’s more to...

    When it comes to talking about progress, the current economic times dictate that a different standard be applied. Just a couple of years ago construction was booming, both commercially and in residential housing. Folks were spending money freely and all seemed well.

        But these are different times. The economy has been in recession, money and jobs have been lost and folks are tightening their belts wherever they can.

        In some cases, progress is now being defined as “just holding on.”

    No on Stalin

        No , no, no. Stalin does not deserve any part of the D-Day Memorial.  It would be the same as putting Satan on the same level with God.

        The D-Day Memorial was built to honor the boys who gave their lives to protect our freedom.  Stalin does not deserve any recognition anywhere. He and Hitler were … evil – evil – evil.

        Do not corrupt our D-Day Memorial with the likes of this.

  • Taking care of veterans'...

    Last week, I had the honor of attending a very special bill signing at the White House. Surrounded by representatives from the major veterans service organizations, the President signed into law the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act, which will ensure our veterans get the health care they have earned. As a member of the Health Subcommittee of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I was a co-sponsor of the legislation and supported it throughout the legislative process.

  • The health care reform bill is bad...

    This summer Democratic leaders in Congress introduced H.R. 3200, “America’s Affordable Health Choices Act”, which sets the tone for a Washington takeover of the health care system -- one defined by federal regulation, mandates, a myriad of new big government programs, and a significant increase in federal spending.  While this legislation contains a multitude of dangerous policies it is particularly detrimental to our senior citizens.

        I hate to say it and I truly hope I’m wrong, but it looks like it’s about time to put a fork in Creigh Deeds’ campaign for governor.

        Deeds has found it all but impossible to break through the thick fog of hatred, fear and paranoia over the Obama agenda that has been spread since the summer. National Republicans are desperate to win the governor’s race here and have spent many millions to get that done.

        As I mentioned earlier this month, although the Bedford area’s elections for board of supervisors and school board consist of six races between the incumbent and Mickey Mouse, the races for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general each feature two candidates. There are three in the 19th District House of Delegates race.

    The value of an education

    Jami Key knows the value of an education.

        She saw her parents sacrifice so she could go to college. The closest library to her home was miles away, but her parents always found a way to get her there so she could “load up on books.” They also purchased a World Book Encyclopedia set for her and sacrificed to help her get into college.

        Those efforts paid off.
