    How to fix it

        With our nation’s health care system in crisis, I have not heard one word about how to really fix it.  I have heard about nationalization, forcing everyone to have insurance and making care providers cut their prices through government mandates.  However, none of these so called “solutions” addresses the real issue, the root cause of skyrocketing health care costs: Health Insurance.

  • Michael Vick has paid his debt and...

    Michael Vick is now a free man. He’s paid his penalty and now should have the right to once again make a living.

        And if he’s in shape, that should include playing in the National Football League this year.

        On Monday, Vick completed his 23-month sentence for running a dog-fighting ring. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell does not yet have a meeting with Vick on his calendar. He should hold that meeting soon and give Vick the opportunity to earn a spot on an NFL roster.

    I’d like to report on two pieces of legislation I’ve introduced in Congress.

    As a member of the Health Subcommittee of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I’ve had the privilege of working to provide the best health care not just for our veterans but also for their families, who join in this incredible sacrifice for our country. To that end, I’ve introduced a bill called the Health Care for Family Care Givers Act of 2009, which would provide medical care for family members who act as the primary caregivers for severely disabled veterans.

  • Vietnam War claims one more casualty

        With all the attention over Michael Jackson and other celebrity deaths in recent weeks, a lot of people may have missed the passing of a very important modern historical figure: Vietnam War architect Robert S. McNamara.

        McNamara died July 6 at the age of 93 at his Washington home. The headline on the obituary story in the Roanoke Times was utterly appropriate: “McNamara never shook Vietnam.”

        In recent weeks we have been treated to the spectacle of the president of what still remains the most powerful nation in the world bullying a small, poor country.

        On June 28, the Honduran Army arrested that country’s president, Manuel Zelaya, put him on a plane and flew him out of the country. President Obama has joined other countries in condemning this as a military coup.

        The problem is, it wasn’t really a coup.

        How President Obama can say that “there is no God who condones taking the life of an innocent human being,” when he himself favors a woman’s right to have an abortion under any circumstance?

        In October 1996, Congress passed Public Law 104-262, the Veteran’s Health care Eligibility Reform Act of 1996.  This legislation paved the way for creating the Uniformed Benefits Package--a standard enhanced health benefits plan available for all enrolled veterans.

        Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s sudden resignation from office has sparked intense speculation about her future, political or otherwise. Palin’s parting speech as governor didn’t exactly give away her plans, probably because she doesn’t know them herself.

        Some think she’ll embark upon a career in television. Others say she is not at all finished with politics and may in fact have resigned to prepare for either a run for the U.S. Senate or for president in 2012.

        Foreign policy challenges for President Barack Obama abound. While I remain highly skeptical of his ability to meet these, it’s certainly far too early to pronounce him Jimmy Carter Jr.

  • Two GOP White House hopefuls Fall...

    It hasn’t been an especially good couple of weeks for Republican governors with presidential aspirations.

        First the news broke that South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford took off for Argentina to meet his mistress. Then, on Friday, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin decided to abruptly resign her post for reasons yet to be explained. If those reasons include a later decision to run for the White House she received some bad advice.

        Several months ago your paper published and article on “A Path To Healing.” This was a pilot program for cancer patients in all stages of treatment or remission, free of charge. I am glad to say that I participated in this program on the second session and it is a well needed program for Bedford. When engaged in the different activities, ie Yoga/Tai Chi, aqua-exercises, and massages/Reiki, your levels of stress, mobility, and fatigue are reduced; which helps in the process of healing.

    In keeping with a 2008 campaign promise, President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats have moved health care reform to the front of the current legislative agenda in Washington.

        The Senate is weighing what’s known to some as the Kennedy-Dodd health care bill, named for two crusading health care reformers, Ted Kennedy and Christopher Dodd, both of whom have championed meaningful health care reform for decades.

    Thank you Tom Perriello — for stabbing the working people of the 5th District in the back.

        On June 29, 41 House Democrats had the courage to stand up to Supreme Leader Nancy Pelosi. They voted against her cap-and-trade energy bill. Congressman Perriello was not one of them. He voted for this nightmare, which narrowly passed the House of Representatives by seven votes.

    Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello is touting the fact that he voted for last week’s cap-and-trade energy bill, even though he knows it’s not widely supported in his district. Even worse, he voted for it though it has the potential, some say, to be the most costly tax increase in American history.

    Last week, the U.S. House passed historic legislation to create millions of new jobs in the clean energy economy and increase our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil. I supported the American Clean Energy and Security Act because I believe it is a necessary step in declaring our energy independence and creating the energy jobs and technology of the future right here at home.
