  • Respect election results

        It’s common, after an election, for those of us who voted for the losing candidate to gripe. That’s what we saw last month in the Bulletin’s Letters section. I’ve also done it in this column space. That’s the American way. We want to express our opinion that the majority made a mistake.

        It’s also the American way for us to respect the result of elections. Once we’ve had our say, we accept the fact that our candidate lost.

        As President-elect Barack Obama (what a wonderful phrase!) prepares for his January inauguration, reaction to the election results from the other side has ranged from silence to hysteria.

        Even in the Internet age, letters to the editor of a newspaper are always an interesting barometer of what “the public” is thinking, at least some of the public.

  • Remember our troops

    As you spend time with your family and friends this holiday season, it is important to remember the thousands of servicemembers in our nation’s military who are serving the United States abroad, at home, or are recovering in military and veterans hospitals.  One way to thank and honor our military personnel is to participate in an outreach program, like the Holiday Mail for Heroes program, which the American Red Cross sponsors each year.

     

  • Once again the world witnessed devastating images of people fleeing from fire, smoke and debris, grief-stricken individuals searching for their loved ones and emergency personnel becoming the first line of defense. The recent terror attacks in Mumbai, India,  which killed more than 170 people, including six Americans, and left hundreds more injured, brought back the horrors of September 11, 2001, when Americans found themselves victims of global terrorism.

    Ask important questions now

        The Bedford County Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors are mandated to have zoning ordinances. Now is the time land owners must ask important questions of County staff,  Commission members and Supervisors as to exactly how their land will be affected by the newly proposed ordinance.

  • Like it or not, for two more months...

    Nationally-syndicated columnist Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post Writers Group wrote a column last week suggesting that until Barack Obama goes from President-elect to President this country and its economy has little hope. An underlying message of the column, and one that has been echoed by others, is that Bush should just step aside and let Obama take over now.

        In just 11 weeks I should be headed for the hills of the Philippines to be part of a medical missions team from my church. While I’m excited about the trip, I also realize I have a lot to do to get ready.

  • VA announces cost of living increase

    On Nov. 26, the new rate tables for those receiving pension or compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs were released.

        The new rates, based on the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) measure signed by the President on Sept. 25, implemented the 5.8 percent cost of living increase and are effective Dec. 31, 2008. The new rates will increase by 5.8 percent the benefits paid by VA for those receiving; Improved Pension, Service Connected Disability Compensation, Dependency Indemnity Compensation, or pension or compensation from other VA programs.

        Why are the beautiful Christmas wreaths in Bedford City turned around so you can only see then when you turn a corner or shop in the city?

        When the wreaths before were put up – they were the same way — people wrote in about how they were done. The City said, “ They couldn’t be turned around.” Three years later, they were turned around. They looked beautiful.

    Two million dollars.

        That’s how much extra money the Bedford County School Board has to work with this year, money saved from the Jefferson Forest and Staunton River High School construction projects. Getting those two projects completed ahead of schedule is a bonus; having them come in under budget is truly something to be thankful for — especially in these tight financial times.

        Now the question becomes: What to do with that money?

        “The conservative era is over.”

        As much pleasure as it gives me to see, read, and hear those words, I can’t claim them for myself.

        They came from none other than Pat Buchanan, the former Nixon aide who spoke them on television on the night of the election.

        He is, of course, right. Conservatism, and its longtime home, the Republican Party, is out of power at all the top levels of our national government, and seems likely to be so for quite some time.

    In this month of November, with Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving, it seems appropriate to remember, pay tribute, and extend thanks to all from Bedford County who have ever served in our country’s armed forces.

        Throughout Bedford County’s history, its citizens have been patriotic in peacetime and in war. Bedford County men have fought and died in nearly every major war of America.

  • Medicare beneficiaries can make...

    Starting November 15th, Medicare beneficiaries will be able to make changes in their health and prescription drug coverage for 2009.  The Medicare annual open enrollment season for Part D prescription drug plans runs from November 15 through December 31, 2008.

     

  • A time to give thanks

    Recently the eyes of the country have been focused on the hotly contested Presidential election and our economic downturn, but it is important to remember that as a nation, we have many reasons to give thanks.  Each year, across Virginia and throughout the country, Americans set aside a special day to express gratitude for the many blessings we have received.

    The Bedford Museum and Genealogical Library would like to use the Thanksgiving holiday to thank all the people who have served to protect our country and our rights.

        Ben Melton has donated to the Museum one of his uniforms that was used in Iraq. This completes our collection of uniforms from every major conflict including the War of 1812.

  • The madness of spring (and politics)

    Don?t hold the presses just yet, but it looks like we have actually achieved spring.

    With that comes a certain madness, the kind that makes some people think it?s July already. Modes of dress (especially among the young) are starting to become shorter and more ?summery,? if there?s such a word. Yet the colds that many people still have should refer them back to the calendar.

    I'm in Ukraine this week. At least, I assume I am as I wrote this before I left Roanoke on April 16. The news reports in the days before my departure were full of stories about canceled flights due to FAA inspections, but the airline I'm flying on wasn't being affected by these. I'm sure that, as you read these words, I'm in Ukraine.

    Every day for weeks we?re asked some variation on this question. All we can say is that we?re going to keep doing the same thing we?ve done for 110 years ... listen to our customers and help them solve their problems. We?ll personally attend to those we serve, and at a fair price, just as most other locally owned businesses in Bedford have always done.
