Apple Valley 5K

The 19th annual Apple Valley 5k took place last Saturday at Gross’s Orchard.
“You couldn’t have asked for a prettier day,” said race director Theresa Boyes. “It was sunny, not too hot and we didn’t have to fight the wind like we’ve had to do sometimes in the past.”

Local makes US Women’s U-20 soccer team

Jefferson Forest Alum Katie Cousins made the US Women’s U-20 soccer team and will be competing with the team for the U-20 World Cup.
“I feel so honored to get a chance to represent the United States in this U-20 World Cup. Sometimes I still catch myself thinking ‘is this still real?’,” said Cousins.

First round of playoffs

Staunton River will host Western Albemarle this Friday for the first round of football playoffs.
“They make me a nervous wreck. They can throw it all over the field and they do what they do very well,” said Poston. “It’s going to be a tough challenge. I am glad we are playing it at home this time.”

Cross Country is on to States

Alexis Mattson, of Liberty, the Jefferson Forest girls team, Caleb Muller and Johnathan Krone, of JF, will continue to the Cross Country State Championship.
Tuesday, November 1 was the 3A West Regional meet. Liberty and Staunton River both had participants.

Jefferson Forest falls to Fauquier

The Jefferson Forest Volleyball team took on Amherst in the conference 23 semi-finals. Forest defeated Amherst 3-0.
Forest took the first set 25-19. The Lady Lancers fought for the second set but the Lady Cavaliers overcame the fight for a 25-21 set win. JF ousted Amherst in the third 25-13.

Liberty falls to Heritage

Mistakes hurt Liberty in its final regular season contest as the Minutemen fell 41-7 to Heritage last Friday.
“We started out really well,” said Coach Chris Watts. “I felt really good about things. We held them and then got the ball and made a good drive and I felt like it was going to be a good game. Then a few things happened and it kind of snowballed until we were down two or three scores and just didn’t recover.”

Forest falls by two

Forest took a lead in the first quarter but was unable to hold it but with less than a minute on the clock, Brookville kicked a field goal to take a two point lead. On Forest’s last posesssion, the Bees made an interception to end the game. The Bees defeated JF 25-23 in last Friday’s final regular season contest.

Jones-ing for a win

The Staunton River Golden Eagles flew past Lord Botetourt finding the endzone nine times to grab a 75-29 victory over the Cavaliers last Friday.
The Golden Eagles were also named the Conference Champions.

Liberty and JF see runners advance to Regionals

   Liberty’s Alexis Mattson took first place at the Conference 30 cross country meet Wednesday, Oct. 26.
   Mattson was named female runner of the year for Conference 30.
   Liberty boys placed second as a team with a total of 61 points and will continue to the Regional meet as a team.
