  • Cavs raid Hive, steal Bees' honey

     

    It was the worst of times.

    It was the best of times.

    Fortunately, for Jefferson Forest's football crew, their best came in the second half of its 28-21 stunning win over Brookville.

    The Bees, meanwhile, found that their opening half of good football wasn't enough to carry them past a team with remarkable backbone.

    Jefferson Forest showed character, poise and determination in overcoming a 21-3 halftime deficit.  Against the defending State champions.  At Brookville.

  • Viking plunder in Valhalla

     

    Your typical Viking hits the high seas, lands on some foreign shore and pillages to his heart's content.

    Well, they have a different type of Viking in north Roanoke.

    The Northside Vikings plundered on their home turf Friday night, pounding Staunton River 59-7 at Valhalla.

    The mercy-rule expedited affair left Staunton River Head Coach Chuck Poston with an appreciation for the power that is Northside.

  • No place of peace

     

    After four years of pain resulting from four years of war, Appomattox served as a place for our nation's healing to start.

    After four quarters of uneven football, Jefferson Forest found the place  to be anything but cathartic.

    The Cavs, flawless in their first two games of the season, had a fourth quarter worth forgetting, allowing the Raiders to pull out a 45-28 win.

  • Hogg-tied and Reynolds-wrapped

     

    Brookville pain.

    That's all Liberty's current group of seniors has known.  Since the Class of '14 matriculated at Liberty High School, the Minutemen have played the Bees four times.  Brookville won all four (including a playoff game) by a total score of 156-39.

    It appears we'll have to wait a bit for that albatross is to lifted from the collective Liberty neck.  The Minutemen squandered a golden opportunity Friday night, losing to the Bees, 31-30, in a manner so painful, words fail to do it justice.

  • In the soup

     

    Having gone 0-for-2 against its county rivals to start the season, Staunton River will turn its attention to a new friend this Friday evening.

    That's when the Eagles will host William Campbell.

    While the Generals have a fine football tradition, things haven't been rosy in Naruna lately.  Campbell has failed to have a winning season in any of the previous four years.

  • Appomattox next for Cavs

     

    There's no surrender in Appomattox.

    Jefferson Forest will find that out when they head to the place "where our nation came together" for a fight on the gridiron.

    In what promises to be the biggest challenge to the Cavs thus far, JF will head to Appomattox.  Both teams enter the fray with 2-0 marks.  Only one will leave the gridiron still unbeaten.

    The schools aren't complete strangers:  Appomattox got to play Jefferson Forest twice in recent memory.

  • JF nearly perfect

     

    What was there not to like about Jefferson Forest's season-opening win over Halifax County?

    At the end of the affair, the scoreboard read:  Home 55, Visitors 14.  That's always nice.

    Additionally, the Cavalier offense treated the Comet defense the way Rosie O'Donnell might handle Open Cheesecake Night.

    Led by cool-headed quarterback Ryan Crist and a three-headed running attack, the Cavs amassed 549 total yards of offense.

  • M-Men roll Eagles

     

    They've got 21st-century perfection.

    Going into last Friday night's tilt against Staunton River, Liberty had not lost a season-opening game this century.  After topping the Eagles, 32-13, that remarkable fact remains true.

    Quarterback Austin Porter ran the dreaded Liberty option in nearly flawless fashion and was part of a trio of Minutemen who raced for over 100 yards apiece.  Porter ran for 107 yards and three touchdowns on just nine carries.

  • The long drought is over

     

    It is as rain to the wilting crop; blankets to the winter sleeper; deep-dish pizza to NJ Governor Chris Christie.

    It is football to the crazed fans of our fair county.

    The three month pigskin potlatch, football fiesta and gridiron gorge-out gets underway for local squads this Friday.

    In fact, all three teams will be staying in the county for their openers.

    The marquee game, of course, features Staunton River heading to Liberty.  The Eagles will attempt to top the Minutemen for the second time in three years.
