  • Extra Points: Concealed Carry...

        This past weekend I was able to spend four hours taking a concealed carry class and learned more about having a permit and carrying a gun than I ever thought I needed to know.
        First, let me start by saying I am an avid hunter and have used and been around firearms since I was young. My dad took me out on my first hunt when I was 5 years old and we ended up shooting a beautiful buck.
        My mom and dad also signed up and took the class with me, so we made this a family affair.

     OVERVIEW- Fishing will be good this month! Water temperature will be in the 80’s.  Best times will be early morning, late afternoon and at night this month. Fishing the past few weeks has been good! Most species of fish are in their summer patterns. Night time is the best time to try your luck!

        Rob and Kathleen Gore, owners of Reba Farm Inn, home of Soaring Saddle, decided to move to Bedford 20 years ago to start a horse farm. “In northern Virginia it’s mostly horse stalling, so we wanted to make a major move, finish raising four kids and have horses back in our lives,” said Kathleen Gore.
        Reba Farm Inn and Soaring Saddle is located in Bedford, near Johnson’s Orchard.

        The sun has been shining, camps have been gearing up and MLB and COPA America has been rolling through. The USA team defeated Ecuador Thursday 2-1 to advance to the semi final round.
        The first goal came in the 22nd minute of the match with a header by Jermaine Jones. Ecuador played a little rough but the USA team didn’t answer back in the same way. Instead, the US squad answered back by winning the match.

        Keeping up the horse farm tradition, Otteridge Farm has been training horses, students and breeding since the 1950’s.
        Eileen Beckman passed away six years ago and her daughter Eileen ‘Randee’ Beckman and daughter Katie Gardner are keeping the farm running.

  • Scuba takes over the YMCA

        The Bedford Area YMCA has been offering Professional Association of Dive Instructors- PADI scuba classes for two years.
        “We teach everything from discover scuba, or bubble maker, to dive master,” said Paul Stern, PADI instructor. The program has been sequenced for participants to be able to try it and then decide if they want to keep going and get certified.

        The Jefferson Forest boys baseball team hosted its youth baseball camp last week, June 7-9.
        The Cavaliers had 65 participating youth ranging in ages from five up to 12 years old. Coach Ryan Gilleland split all the youth into age groups and had different stations where the youth would work on certain aspects of the game.

        The Bedford County Recreation Department held its first indoor tennis and archery camp this past week for youth in the area. The camp was held at the old group home gym near Falling Creek Park.
        With the camp doing so well, Coach Dave Eckes has decided to hold another camp. “We are also going to be offering another camp July 11-15,” he said.

  • Fat Tire Bike Weekend

        The Centra Health Fat Tire bike weekend took place this past weekend at Falling Creek Park. It kicked off Friday, June 10 and finished up on Sunday, June 12.
        The Bedford Co. Recreation Department decided in 2006 to put bike trails into their parks. “In 2007 we started promoting Bedford County as a mountain bike trail destination,” said Kenny Palmer the Operations Coordinator for Bedford Co. Parks and Recreation.
