    Jefferson Forest traveled to West Virginia for a weekend of wrestling on Jan. 8-9. Beckley was the destination and The West Virginia Army National Guard Duals was the event, a grueling 2 day event of five matches per day with teams from VA, OH, SC, and of course WV.

        Liberty traveled to Brookville to wrestle against E.C Glass and Brookville. However, Liberty and Brookville decided to wait until this Wednesday to wrestle each other. Liberty did wrestle E.C. Glass and won 42-30.

        Liberty’s swim team traveled to Sweet Briar on Tuesday, Jan. 5 for a quad meet against Brookville, Amherst and Appomattox.
        Brookville finished first overall  with a team score of 603; Appomattox finished second with 333; Liberty finished third with 295; and Amherst finished fourth with 275.

    The Jefferson Forest Wrestling Cavaliers have started the year with a young and inexperienced team. “We knew we were going to be in a rebuilding year because we had eight seniors graduate last year and one was our state champ,” said Coach Bill ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson.
    “We have a really young team and most of the time we have five or six freshmen in our lineup,” said Hutchinson.

    Staunton River traveled to Rustburg Tuesday, Dec. 29 for the Rustburg Christmas Tournament. River fell 59-44 to the Red Devils.
    “I thought we were decent defensively when we were able to stop transition and defend 5 on 5, but to their credit, they were able to turn us over and score in the open court,” said Coach Brandon Harris.
    Rustburg took over in the first leading 14-13. River made a comeback in the second to take the lead 25-24 at the half.

    Staunton River girls basketball traveled to Heritage Tuesday, Dec. 29 for a non-district game. The Lady Golden Eagles notched a 43-41 victory over the Lady Pioneers.
    “I am proud of the girls for their ‘Never give up’ attitude. Even when we got down in the 4th quarter and we were in foul trouble, we just kept grinding and came back one basket at a time,” said Coach Kimberly Jones.
    Staunton River took the lead 10-9 in the first quarter. The Lady Golden Eagles extended their lead to 16-10 by halftime.

    The Jefferson Forest girls basketball team traveled to Western Albemarle for the Daily Progress holiday classic tournament on Monday, Dec. 28 where Forest rolled over Western Albemarle 47-32.
    Forest took the lead 12-8 in the first. The Lady Cavaliers extended their lead in the second to 23-17.
    After halftime JF took the third and led 32-21. The Lady Cavaliers flexed in the fourth to finish 47-32.
    For Forest: Ashley Evans scored 22 points; Emily Deitrick 12, Cassie Pelletier 8, and Tiffany Carey 5.

  • Forest competes well at K Guard...

    The Jefferson Forest boys basketball team traveled to Hidden Valley for the K Guard Classic on Dec 29-30. Jefferson Forest went 2-1 in the tournament and finished in second place. “To my knowledge this is the best we have done in this tournament in a very long time, maybe ever,” said Forest Coach Cameron Shepherd.
    In the second game the Cavaliers fell to Cave Spring 57-39.

    All three Bedford County high schools participated in the 37th annual Liberty Christian Academy wrestling tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 29-30. There were 26 schools that participated in the tournament.
    Staunton River finished third with a score of 218.5, just above LCA with 215.5. Jefferson Forest placed 13th with 60.0 and Liberty placed 17th with 42.0.
    Some other team scores were: Benedictine finished first with 315.5; Eastern View finished second with 277.5; Lord Botetourt finished 5th with 169.5.
