        The Liberty girls wounded the Lady Pioneers 51-38 in a district  basketball game on Friday, Jan. 15.
        “From the opening tip the girls controlled the tempo of the game,” said Coach Emilee Dunton.
        The Lady Minutemen tied in the first period at 10. Liberty exploded in the second scoring 18 points and taking the lead 28-18.

        It was an unexciting end for what was a whale of a game as the Staunton River boys basketball took on Rockbridge on Friday, Jan 15 in a district match up. River fell to Rockbridge 52-51.
        Staunton River took a 15-8 lead in the first period. The Golden Eagles gave up some ground in the second but kept their lead over the Wildcats 20-17 going into halftime.

        Staunton River boys basketball fell to Blue Ridge Powerhouse Northside 64-29 Tuesday, Jan. 5.
        Northside took the lead in the first 21-6. River outscored Northside in the second but was unable to make a comeback. Northside led 28-14 at the half.
        Northside held River back in the second half of the game and finished with a 64-29 victory over the Eagles.

        Liberty girls basketball won its fourth victory of the season last Tuesday, Jan. 5. The Lady Minutemen defeated Rockbridge 56-49.
        Liberty started out strong taking over 14-4 in the first period. The Lady Minutemen extended their lead in the second 28-14.

    Jefferson Forest traveled to West Virginia for a weekend of wrestling on Jan. 8-9. Beckley was the destination and The West Virginia Army National Guard Duals was the event, a grueling 2 day event of five matches per day with teams from VA, OH, SC, and of course WV.

        Liberty traveled to Brookville to wrestle against E.C Glass and Brookville. However, Liberty and Brookville decided to wait until this Wednesday to wrestle each other. Liberty did wrestle E.C. Glass and won 42-30.

        Liberty’s swim team traveled to Sweet Briar on Tuesday, Jan. 5 for a quad meet against Brookville, Amherst and Appomattox.
        Brookville finished first overall  with a team score of 603; Appomattox finished second with 333; Liberty finished third with 295; and Amherst finished fourth with 275.

    The Jefferson Forest Wrestling Cavaliers have started the year with a young and inexperienced team. “We knew we were going to be in a rebuilding year because we had eight seniors graduate last year and one was our state champ,” said Coach Bill ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson.
    “We have a really young team and most of the time we have five or six freshmen in our lineup,” said Hutchinson.

  • Golden Eagles Fall to Rustburg

    Staunton River traveled to Rustburg Tuesday, Dec. 29 for the Rustburg Christmas Tournament. River fell 59-44 to the Red Devils.
    “I thought we were decent defensively when we were able to stop transition and defend 5 on 5, but to their credit, they were able to turn us over and score in the open court,” said Coach Brandon Harris.
    Rustburg took over in the first leading 14-13. River made a comeback in the second to take the lead 25-24 at the half.
