Today's Sports

  • Wrestlers take to mats with...

A familiar refrain is ringing through the wrestling rooms and gymnasiums of the county squads:  Knock off Brookville.

  • Liberty boys' basketball...

Have no doubt about it:  The Liberty basketball team is chock full o’ talent this season.

Also, have no doubt about it:  That talent level guarantees the team nothing.

  • Jefferson Forest boys'...

In a world where height doesn’t count, the Jefferson Forest basketball team would be one of the favorites in the race for the Seminole crown.

  • Staunton River boys'...

The fans of Staunton River will get their first look at the 2008-09 Golden Eagles this Friday night.  That’s when Staunton River hosts Bassett for the team’s first game in its new gym.

  • Emotional bookends--commentary

I saw Jefferson Forest football players shed tears twice this season.

  • Many (un)happy returns

Jefferson Forest discovered that Amherst is much more than a one-trick pony.

The Lancers employed exceptional special teams play in dashing the Cavaliers’ hopes of a shot at state.

Instead, it will be Amherst which moves on to the state semifinals, due to its 40-10 manhandling of the lads from Forest.

The weathermen called for a brisk night.  If 25 degrees is your idea of brisk, then the evening met the criteria.

  • Seminole looks up for grabs in...

Every season, so the theory goes, the district title is up for grabs in just about any sport.

This season, it appears that the theory is accurate.  With Brookville having graduated its dominance, the crown could fall upon any of the solid candidates’ heads.

The three Bedford County teams bring a mix of old and new to the fore, and each has a shot of being in the thick of things.

  • Ingrate

As we gather round the table this Thursday, we’ll be certain to give thanks for those blessings which we have received during the year.

For me, the bounty has been plentiful.   I will not, however, mention the following in my thanks to the Almighty:

  • Commentary - Parity and the ACC

I had to suffer through Virginia Tech’s win over Maryland the other night. The wife grew up in the Old Line State (that’s what Maryland is called on its state quarter anyway), so she cheers for the Terps.

At the time, Maryland was ranked in the top 25 of the AP poll. The Terps no longer bear that distinction.

Additionally, Georgia Tech fell out, having lost to North Carolina.

That leaves the Tar Heels and Florida State as the sole top-25 teams from the ACC.

  • Minutemen hold off Lord...

It had been three years since Liberty last hosted a playoff game.

Obviously, when the Minutemen hosted Lord Botetourt in their Regional playoff opener, they wanted to make sure that everyone got their money’s worth.

    Mission accomplished.

No fan left this one early, as the Cavs stormed back in the final minutes of the game. Liberty was able to hang on for dear life, with Vonte Harper’s last-second interception finally dashing the Botetourt hopes.

This matchup carried some disappointment with it before the opening kickoff.
