  • Ladies' night

    Staunton River easily clinched its berth in the Regional where the Lady Eagles will be joined by County mates Jefferson Forest and Liberty. The three squads advanced with opening round wins over Seminole District rivals.

    The wins also put the trio of Bedford teams into the District semifinals, which include Brookville. This past Tuesday, the Lady Cavs took on the Bees while the Golden Eagles squared off with the Minettes.

    The District championship will be played Friday evening, along with the boys' titlist tilt, at Jefferson Forest.

  • Commentary--the warriors among us

    I recently became aware of a fascinating Web site, "Baseball in Wartime" (baseballinwartime.com). It's run by a fellow named Gary Bedingfield, an Englishman who lives in Scotland.

    The site contains scads of information related to the wartime experiences of baseball players and the baseball experiences of those that helped to win the war. As the focus is on World War II, there is a good amount on some of the men from Bedford that marched off to a destiny rife with valor and sacrifice.

  • Protecting our boarders

    It?s not easy to be a skateboarder in Bedford. With no dedicated place for them to ply their trade, the area?s boarders are relegated to the sidewalks and parking lots that dot the town and county.

    When they do skate at those spots, they often risk incurring the wrath of the owning merchants or, worse, being chased off by officers from the Bedford Police Department.

    Well, the boarders lives look to become significantly better. Plans are in full swing to build a skate park at the county?s Falling Creek Park.

  • Lady Eagles take county title;...

    The Liberty girls? basketball team did its best to try and ruin Senior Night for the Lady Cavs. Forest prevailed 35-28, in a nail-biter that was nowhere near reminiscent of the earlier year matchup. In that game, Forest pounded the Minettes 49-31.

    ?(The Minettes) weren?t coming here to bear gifts, have cake and carry balloons,? said Forest Head Coach Tom Brown of the Liberty plan to rain on his seniors? parade. ?We were fortunate to get out of this one with a win.?

  • Minutemen sweep county hoops

    The Seminole District boys? tournament opens play this Monday. Two questions are foremost in the minds of the fans. First, can anyone knock off Brookville? Second, who will come away with the remaining three berths to the Regional? Brookville earned an automatic seed courtesy of its regular season championship.

    Liberty is in the best position to challenge the Bees. However, the second-place finishers may have been getting ahead of themselves last week, as they stumbled against Rustburg, losing 59-50, before putting away an especially feisty squad from Forest, 71-55.

  • Commentary--Let's not give...

    My favorite line whenever someone tells me he?s home schooling his kids is ?Oh, you just wanted him to be class valedictorian...? Ba-da-bing.

    I?m usually the only one who laughs at the joke. Seems these home school folks are a serious lot when it comes to their kids.

    Last week, the home school bunch took a serious shot to the chops when the Education Committee of Virginia?s House of Delegates voted to defeat House Bill 375. The legislation would have allowed home schooled students to participate in VHSL sanctioned activities within their resident school districts.

  • Lady Eagles settle for second;...

    The Staunton River girls dropped a heart-wrenching game at Brookville, 55-49, giving the Golden Eagles their third loss of the season to the undefeated Bees (River has only one other loss).

    However, this game was eminently winnable, unlike the other two games. It is obvious that Staunton River has learned to play with the high-flying Bees.

  • Boys' hoops District...

    Brookville completed its stranglehold on first place in the Seminole District. The only question for the Bees, at this point, is whether they will run the District gauntlet in undefeated fashion. The smart money says they will.

    Brookville has assured itself of a first round bye in the District tourney and an automatic first round game in the Regional. Liberty, which settled for second place when it lost 83-66 to Brookville, is only assured of a home opener in the Districts, most likely against Staunton River.

    In my XLVII years on this planet, I've been invited to (and asked to leave) many Super Bowl parties. I feel I've developed a sense of what kind of people you might encounter at such fests. Therefore, if you're hosting a Super Bowl party, you might want to keep these guidelines in mind when crafting your invitation list.

  • Crunch time for gals

    All three county teams enter this week with a lot on the line: Staunton River aims at unseating Brookville; Forest looks to snag the final home seed from Rustburg; and Liberty wants to avoid finishing in the basement by keeping Amherst there.

    All three squads are on the road. Staunton River faces the Bees for the third time, having lost in the Byrd Invitational and at home in the regular season. While Brittany Campbell has been a thorn in the Eagle side, it has been Joyous Tharrington that has provided the stake in the heart in those two losses. Neutralizing her will be key.
