  • Lady Eagles settle for second;...

    The Staunton River girls dropped a heart-wrenching game at Brookville, 55-49, giving the Golden Eagles their third loss of the season to the undefeated Bees (River has only one other loss).

    However, this game was eminently winnable, unlike the other two games. It is obvious that Staunton River has learned to play with the high-flying Bees.

  • Boys' hoops District...

    Brookville completed its stranglehold on first place in the Seminole District. The only question for the Bees, at this point, is whether they will run the District gauntlet in undefeated fashion. The smart money says they will.

    Brookville has assured itself of a first round bye in the District tourney and an automatic first round game in the Regional. Liberty, which settled for second place when it lost 83-66 to Brookville, is only assured of a home opener in the Districts, most likely against Staunton River.

    In my XLVII years on this planet, I've been invited to (and asked to leave) many Super Bowl parties. I feel I've developed a sense of what kind of people you might encounter at such fests. Therefore, if you're hosting a Super Bowl party, you might want to keep these guidelines in mind when crafting your invitation list.

  • Crunch time for gals

    All three county teams enter this week with a lot on the line: Staunton River aims at unseating Brookville; Forest looks to snag the final home seed from Rustburg; and Liberty wants to avoid finishing in the basement by keeping Amherst there.

    All three squads are on the road. Staunton River faces the Bees for the third time, having lost in the Byrd Invitational and at home in the regular season. While Brittany Campbell has been a thorn in the Eagle side, it has been Joyous Tharrington that has provided the stake in the heart in those two losses. Neutralizing her will be key.

  • Minutemen run with big dogs

    Liberty leveraged its size, agility and quickness in completing a regular season sweep over Staunton River. This time, the visiting Minutemen won 71-48.

    The Minutemen are only a victory over Forest away from taking the informal county crown.

    Golden Eagle senior Mike Lynch put on a fine shooting display, nailing six three-pointers in leading all scorers with 18 points. Liberty's Martrey Stevens nearly matched Lynch as he hit three treys in picking up 17 points.

  • Forest pesters Bees before...

    The law of averages finally caught up with the lads from Forest.

    Playing Brookville on even terms throughout the first quarters of their matchup, the Cavs developed a collective cold shooting hand in the fourth stanza and fell to the Bees by the score of 48-33.

    "On this night (Brookville) was too much," said Cav Head Coach Paul Smith. "It was a matter of them playing well, not us playing poorly."

  • Commentary - Natives and C'...

    I write this as a C'mere.

    There are two kinds of people in our area: Those that were born here and those that located here from elsewhere. In Richmond, all transplants were known as "C'meres," a contraction of "Came here," as opposed to "born here." (And, no, those folks are not known as "B'rneres." They are just plain Richmonders.)

    I haven't heard the C'mere term used here. However, for the sake of simplicity, I'd like to use it in pointing out the differences between locals and transplants when it comes to sports.

  • Dix leads way for Lady Cavs over...

    It was Mandy Dix's night as Jefferson Forest easily handled Liberty on the Minettes home court a week ago, Tuesday. Dix played her heart out and Liberty was unable to answer her slashing drives in the middle.

    Dix made Liberty pay for her aggressive play. Seemingly every time Dix drove the paint, it resulted in either a layup or a foul. Throughout the third quarter, and into the fourth, she hit nine straight free throws, two layups and a turnaround, quick jumper, turning a nine point halftime lead into an insurmountable 20 point gap.

  • Lady Eagles soar above County

    Jefferson Forest picked the wrong night to host the Golden Eagles.

    The Staunton River girls' basketball team came out with a vengeance and systematically dismantled their county counterpart squad from Jefferson Forest.

    The Lady Eagles could do no wrong, as all aspects of their game were hitting on all cylinders. A team that has allowed teams to linger and make games close looked more like a team that wanted to throttle the opposition.

    "We came out with a point to prove," said Eagle Head Coach Kim Jones. "We wanted to show we can be at the top."

  • Staunton River vs Forest looms...

    In what is shaping up to be one of the more critical games of the season, Staunton River will travel to Forest to take on the Lady Cavs this Friday evening.

    If not for Brookville, these two would be battling it out at the top for Seminole supremacy. However, until someone steps up to show otherwise, the Bees are clearly at the top of the heap. Brookville has already beaten Staunton River twice this season (only once in Seminole play, the other came in the Byrd tournament), while the Bees dispatched Forest just before the break.
