  • Minutemen deck the halls with...

    There was startlingly little Christmas goodwill between the Liberty and Staunton River basketball squads as they faced off in their Seminole District Openers on the Minutemen hardwood. Liberty took the best of this donnybrook, 80-55, in a game who's outcome was never really in doubt, but was a wild one nonetheless.

    Lady Cavs at full throttle

    The Jefferson Forest girls have to be given due consideration by the rest of the Seminole District and anyone else who takes a look at their brilliant start to the season. Of course, the big tests for the Lady Cavs are coming up shortly. But, for now, they look as good as anybody out there.

  • Eagles earn third at Toughman...

    Both Staunton River and Jefferson Forest put themselves to the test, heading to Hidden Valley for the Titan Toughman Tournament. The Golden Eagles (172.5) came away with a third place finish, behind Region IV powerhouse Blacksburg (230.5) and fellow Region III squad Northside (220).

    Forest took eighth place, in the field of 16 teams, with 109.5 points .

    Staunton River was led by 135 pound champion Jeremy Tyree, who took the final with an 8-3 decision. Two of Tyree's wins came against very tough competition. Tyree has but one loss so far this season.

  • We the living--commentary

    Congratulations to UVa's Chris Long on a tremendous season. He is now reaping the hardware that he has earned through his fine play for the Cavaliers.

    Most recently, Long was awarded the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation's top collegiate defensive end. The Ted Hendricks Award? A quick check informed me that Ted "The Stork" Hendricks is alive and well. And yet, there is an award named after him.

  • Tournament time for wrestling...

    It was tournament-time this past weekend, and all three county wrestling squads were in action. Staunton River made the long journey to Winston-Salem, NC, for the Parkland Duals. Liberty and Jefferson Forest had shorter jaunts, as they both grappled in the Rustburg Invitational.

  • Commentary: A bad person,...

    So, this is the rehabilitation of an image?

    Michael Vick?s cherubic mug once again grabbed our collective attention, as sentencing was imposed for his heinous crimes.

    The former quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons only stepped up to his responsibilities when he was cornered like, well like a dog. After his pals turned on him and when faced with overwhelming evidence, the man finally copped a guilty plea. Vick then proceeded to smoke marijuana while out on bail.

  • Girls' B-ball teams like...

    For Goldilocks, the porridge at the Three Bears' house was either too hot, too cold or just right.

    Similarly, for area girls' hoops teams, their starts have been either very hot, very cold or very tepid.

    Forest, so far, has the hot hand, reeling off victories in their first four games. The Liberty Minettes have been the cold team, with nary a win to their credit, yet. Staunton River is off to a lukewarm start, splitting its first two games.

  • Local lads' roundball...

    Forest's Head Coach Paul Smith could not hide his disappointment following the Cavs' lackluster loss to visiting Appomattox. "We're beyond the point of earning moral victories," he said. "Merely hanging in there is not what we're here for."

    The Cavs looked unimpressive as they let the Raiders' Michael St. John take charge of the game and put up 23 points, nearly half of the Appomattox total in its 48-44 win.

    Ted Price scored nearly half the Forest points, as he pumped in 21 for the game. Brandon Harrison added 10 and Todd tenPas chipped in a pair.

  • Peaks run a smashing success

    Perfect weather, a challenging course and the Christmas spirit combined to make the YMCA's annual Peaks of Otter Classic the largest in its 28 year history. The event, which included 5K and 10K runs, along with fun runs for the younger harriers, drew 350 eager participants.

    The sun broke through an overcast sky on the crisp Saturday morning just in time to welcome Bedford's finest runners across the finish line.

  • Applied science

    A visit to Jeff Steele's classroom, is like a visit to another culture. There, one is exposed to formulae that rival the Rosetta Stone in their incomprehensibility. Equations analyzing rotational motion with constant angular accelerators are the norm.

    They make sense to Steele because he has worked with them most of his life. He is a trained nuclear engineer.

    Yet, Steele teaches calculus and physics courses at Liberty High School. He also serves as coach of the school's swim team and Minettes' soccer program.
