  • Jones keeps on truckin'

    Local driver Chris Jones continued his remarkable ascent up the NASCAR chain with an impressive finish at last weekend?s Phoenix 150, a part of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Jones, a native of Forest, started 35th in the Friday night race, but worked his way up in the field. In the end, following a mishap in the pits and after some shuffling on cautions, he settled for 27th place in a field that included such hot brands as Kevin Harvick, Stacey Compton and Mike Skinner.

  • Forest has solid showing at...

    The Jefferson Forest cross country team wrapped up its season as it began it: as a team. Competing as Bedford County?s only representative in the State Championship at Great Meadows (Warrenton), the boys? team took eighth place, while the girls? squad nabbed eleventh.

    The boys? race was a fleet affair, with the top 15 finishers all breaking the 16 minute barrier for the 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) course.

  • College Football's top 25...

    What madness is this? I look at the latest football polls and see the likes of Kansas and Missouri sprinkled into the top 10. Hawaii is angling to break into the upper echelons. At times, Kentucky, South Florida and South Carolina threatened the top.

    I feel that the college football scene has become a kind of Bizarro World, where everything is supposedly normal but, in truth, is inverted.

    Take a look at the BCS standings this week. LSU is at the top. So far, so good. The Bayou Bengals are a traditional football powerhouse.

  • Minutemen earn payback chance

    Undercurrents will abound when Liberty plays its Regional semifinal playoff game against district rival, Brookville.

    The Minutemen should be licking their chops at the prospect of making up for the drubbing they received at the hands of the Bees five weeks ago. In that game, Liberty watched a 20-7 halftime lead evaporate after Homecoming activities, as Brookville caught fire in a 47-20 win.

The Liberty football team showed how it can play when hitting on all cylinders and chose a perfect game in which do do so: the opening round of the VHSL playoffs.

  • Liberty opens playoffs at...

    The Minutemen get another shot at the Cavs. This time, Liberty won?t be facing their arch-rivals from the East. Instead, these Cavaliers are situated to the west.

    Liberty opens its second season, hitting the road for an opening-round playoff game with Lord Botetourt.

    Liberty is the number 5 seed in Region III, Division 3, while Botetourt is the number 4 seed. Botetourt (4-6) got the higher seed than Liberty (5-5) due to the VHSL points system, despite a worse record.

  • Cavs top Liberty in regular...

    Judging from the reaction of the crowd at Sabre Stadium and from the jubilant Forest players, one might have thought that it was the Cavs that were advancing to the playoffs.

    For the Cav faithful, who had endured a season of disappointment, Forest?s drubbing of Liberty in the regular season finale seemed to be the desired salve.

  • Touchy, touchy—...

    Recently, two prominent and well-respected figures from the world of sports were insulted, or so we have been led to believe. Joe Gibbs, the past and present guru of the Washington Redskins, was supposedly disrespected when the New England Patriots continued to pile up the points after the game was already firmly decided. Joe Torre, skipper of the New York Yankees, was insulted by the paltry sum that was offered to him by the Yanks to return for another year. Torre opted to hang up his pinstripes.

  • Local volley ballers wrap up...

    Both the Liberty and the Jefferson Forest volleyball programs proved that they are on the upswing, as each advanced to Regional play last week. The advancement comes as the two squads nabbed the number 3 and 4 slots in the Seminole District Tournament that was hosted by Liberty.

    Both teams were resilient, bouncing back from an opening game loss to sweep the next three games for the win. Liberty dispatched Heritage, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23. Forest took care of Amherst, 24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-11.

  • Local runners dominate Apple...

    One hundred nineteen runners participated Saturday, Nov. 3, in the 10th annual Apple Valley 5K cross country race at Gross? Orchard in Bedford County. Liberty High School cross country coach Sarah Krycinski, 27, of Bedford finished first among the women and 11th overall, covering the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes, 57 seconds.

    Krycinski was disappointed, in spite of the win. ?I didn?t beat the record,? she said. ?I did all I could but just couldn?t get it.?

    Nonetheless, the coach was pleased with having some of her runners at the event, which she called ?homey.?
