Jefferson Forest’s girls indoor track team won the Seminole District title and Staunton River’s boys squad claimed the Blue Ridge District crown at their respective meets Saturday.
The Cavaliers topped second-place finisher Heritage by 20 points, 119-99, and the Golden Eagles outpaced runnerup William Fleming by 51 points, 148-97.
JF’s boys team finished second behind Heritage and Staunton River’s girls took sixth.
Both meets were held at Heritage High School.
Kandace McIvor and Hannah Pettyjohn paced the JF attack. McIvor took first-places in the 500m (1:27.89) and 55m hurdles (8.94). She finished second in the triple jump (35-0) and fourth in the long jump. Pettyjohn was first in the high jump (5-2) and the pole vault (12-0). She finished second behind McIvor in the 55m hurdles.
Cross-country standout Zoie Lamanna was first in the 1,000m (3:14.93) and teammate Shauna Skow was second at 3:20.66.
Alexis Plaster was second in the 1,600m and Lauren Vossen was third. Kielyn Newsom finished behind McIvor in the 500m with a 1:28.82.
Liberty’s girls, who finished seventh, got solid performances from Mary Malcolm, who took second in the 3,200m and fourth in the 1,600m, and Susannah Allen, fourth in the pole vault.
JF’s boys swept the top four spots in the 1,000m, led by Brannon Adams (2:44.50). Jacob White was second (2:54.93), Keegan Venable was third (2:55.34) and Jonah Packer was fourth (2:52.16).
Alex Jordan was first in the 1,600m, Jaren Lee was second in the 500m and Brody Rice was second in the shot put. The Cavaliers’ 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams also took first places.
Liberty’s Noah Cowen was second in the 3,200m and the Minutemen’s 4x800 team took second and their 4x200 team was third.
In the Blue Ridge District competition, Staunton River’s Alfred Finney won the 300m with a 39.97, Kayden Ryder was first in the 500m with a 1:12.45, Spencer Kearns claimed the 1,000m with a 3:00.26 and Sam Weddle took the 1,600m and 3,200m with a 4:55.10 and a 10:27.72, respectively.
Staunton River’s 4x400 team won with a 3:53.35.
The Golden Eagles swept the pole vault event, led by Bryce Cook with a 9-3. Kearns was second and Ryder was third. Malakhi Gregory took seconds in the triple jump (39-02) and long jump (20-08). Ashton Hancock was second in the shot put (38-08).
On the girls’ side, Staunton River’s Alexis Ice took firsts in the 1,000m (3:23.79) and 1,600 (5:58.46). Lilly Phillips was fourth in the shot put (27-04).
The Class 3 and Class 4 indoor track championships are Feb. 28-March 1 at Liberty University.
The Cavaliers (9-10) held off the winless Golden Eagles in the battle of Bedford County rivals.
Colin Mays led JF with 15 points and Braden French added 10 points in a game that close from the start. The Cavaliers led by just two at the half and outscored Staunton River 16-12 in the fourth quarter.
Lucas Overstreet poured in a game-high 19 point for the Golden Eagles (0-21). Jared Steele finished with 12 points and Jesse Brown, a callup from the JV team, pitched in with 11 points, including three 3-pointers.
A night before, Staunton River was clipped by Blue Ridge District rival Lord Botetourt, 65-48.
Overstreet scored 17 against LB and Steele had 11.
The Bulldogs led 31-12 at the half and cruised past the Minutemen.
Deshawn Johnson, Parker Holdren and Jayden Brown each scored seven points for Liberty (2-13).
The Minutemen close out the regular season this week with games against Heritage, Jefferson Forest and E.C. Glass.
