Starting with the defending 4A State Champion Liberty Christian Academy Bulldogs and finishing with Seminole District powerhouse Amherst County with a double-header against Lord Botetourt in between, the Liberty Minutemen had their work cut out for them the week leading into Spring Break.

Liberty fell to the Bulldogs 3-0 to start its toughest week of the season. Returning home to Liberty Lake Park the next day for a double-header against Lord Botetourt the team didn’t fare much better. Falling 11-4 and 5-4 in the double-header pushed Liberty’s record to 1-3.

Hosting the Amherst Lancers on Friday March 31 Liberty had the opportunity to end the week on a high note.

The Lancers are a powerhouse in the Seminole District and have hopes of making a deep playoff push. They showcased those intentions on this afternoon.

Putting three runs on the board in the first inning Liberty found itself with its back against the wall early.

Instead of rolling over the Minutemen responded. Liberty loaded the bases with no outs. Chris Martin, a Lynchburg College commit, hit a sacrifice fly deep to centerfield to drive one run home. At the end of the first inning Amherst led 3-1.

In the third inning, down 4-1, Liberty found some more offense. Jacob Heck got the inning started with a leadoff double for the Minutemen. Heck would eventually cross home plate before the inning’s end to cut Amherst’s lead back to two, 4-2.

Heck was the last Minutemen to cross home plate. Amherst added four more runs and defeated Liberty 8-2.

Heck went 1-3 with a double and a run scored to lead the Minutemen. Martin added a RBI and Bryce Grant pitched four innings and struck out two Lancers.

The loss drops Liberty’s record to 1-4 headed into Spring Break. Following the break Liberty returns to action against Bedford County rival Staunton River. The Minutemen will travel to the Golden Eagles on Monday April 9 and the game will begin at 5 p.m.
